Wine stored until they're 21? might even prove to be a good investment.

Gift card/voucher?

It's practical, as it can be spent however, and as you put it inside with the card, it's easy for you and the recipient to carry.

How old is the child? My daughter was 9 months yet two people bought comforters suited to smaller babies. She also got (off the top of my head) two silver bangles, a necklace, a picture frame, a bible, a cuddly bunny, a first curl/tooth pot, two China tea sets, a cutlery set, a set of Winnie the Pooh hardback books, an age appropriate toy, clothes, and a silver sheep money box.

Many of these things are going to be put away for years. So I think unless you're a grandparent or godparent don't be too focussed on getting a keepsake as it might be one of many and get put away. A nice toy the child can play with, a traditional hardback book (Alice in Wonderland or perhaps The Tiger That Came To Tea), a pretty outfit, toddler cutlery that isn't too fancy to use, money for their savings account or to be put towards something needed are all my suggestions.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

Xmas Saver!
I'd agree re a nice book, as when DD got christened, we had 8 bangles, 6 tooth and curl sets, silver and gold crosses, st christophers...

I ended up having to return some of the jewellery (to jewellers), I got a couple of really nice jewellery boxes for as she was groeing up (shes 12 now).

I brought dd a gold charm bracelet, 2 of her godmothers brought her a gold charm.

Christening Jewellery is perfect to celebrate Christening event. My mommy had gifted my little princess with a beautiful christening bracelet and necklace which is made of freshwater pearls, gemstones as well as crystals, all pierced into coated nylon thread with huge pull. All of these materials are very safe for babies to wear. I loved it a lot. This keepsake will remind my daughter about this special moment in her life.
