The OS things I just don't get on with:
    1. using slow cooker
    2. rubber chicken (only DH likes anything other than breast so false economy for us, I buy breast when on offer/reduced aisle!)
    3. oats in mince- bleurgh, I do add lentils (green normally) and bulk out with veg
    4. washing gloop- seems too much faff, I use washing powder normally, occasionally soap nuts or eco balls.
    5. value meat of any kind is a no no imho, poor quality, however I will buy value tinned toms, sweetcorn etc.

That's okay. This is just my latest rubber Chicken... I am sure I have a few other uses for spice it up... a few I can remember are...

Sometimes I do chicken soup/stew instead of noodle soup... but it's got no chicken in it... just the broth! Sometimes I get less out of a chicken (9 meals) and use a thigh in a stew.

Sometimes I use 1 leg and thigh and make a chicken and brocoli (and potato) pie (6 portions) served with mash or chips and veg!

Sometimes I make pea soup with 1 leg and thigh (8 portions)

Oh and there is Spanish Rice and Prawn One Pot with Chicken (1 thigh)!

I just hope it inspired you... because I find trying to think of making my chicken stretch REALLY challenges me, which I find fun!

I need to get a life now

I am not the biggest fan of the slow cooker either... BUT I love my Pressure cooker! I think everyone likes 1 more then the other!

I have learned recently that the Slow Cooker works best on high... and timing really doesn't matter... 4 - 8 hours always works... I never overcook things!

I also do lentils... but oats don;t work me me either! I bulk with veg too!

I only buy from the butchers... sometimes people on the MSE forums (not the OS boards) argue with me about this... but I find the meat is meat and not water... and goes so much further! We saved £10 a month doing that swap... we now save £20 a month thanks to MSE :T

Ok I have to confess that although being fairly skilled in the cooking department I cannot make soup:o!!

It doesnt seem to matter how I make it , or what I put in it, it always ends up tasting of old veg and dishwater:eek: lol!
Despite many attempts from the os tips for soup making on here I have admitted defeat and have asked my friend to make me some so I can freeze it....she makes lovely soup :Aso I am saved:D

  • I'm impressed. Not sure I would make it stretch that far every day, but a very interesting post.

Don't say you didn't ask for it!!!

First Roast the chicken and then strip off the chicken and place in piles according to what kind of meat it is (Breast, leg, thigh and 'other'

    1) Roast Chicken (2 portions - This is the tricky meal!!!! I use the wing meat, oysters and any 'other' meat) this may not seem like a lot but we bulk this meal out with tons of yorkshire puds and never notice a lack of meat (a 2kg chicken has a lot of 'other' meat under the carcass if you strip is properly!)

2&3) Nutty Chicken Curry (8 portions - using 1.5 chicken breast and bulking out with peppers, mushrooms, peas and sweetcorn) and 300ml of Chicken Stock

    4) Chicken Pizza (3 -4 Portions - Using 0.5 chicken breast)

    5) Chicken pasta (3 - 4 portions - using 1 chicken leg, mixed through either a tomato based or cheese based sauce, topped with breadcrumbs and parmasan and grilled)

    6) Chicken and leek with Chips (3 - 4 portions - using 1 chicken thigh, shallow fry with leeks (mushrooms if you want), add chicken soup and serve over chips!

7&8) Chicken Curry (6 - 8 portions - using 1 leg and theigh, bulked out with lots of different veg for your 5 a day!)

9&10) Chicken Noodle Soup (6 - 8 portions, basically HM stock with VERY small pasta in it, served with HM bread!)

My family LOVE their meat... and none of these gets complained as having too little meat. I normally make the chicken when I don't have my son as the roast uses the most meat, then freeze and portion the chicken and stock and enjoy these meals over an 8 week period!!

The cats get all the skin and gristle!!!

    HTH!
    Put the kettle on. ;)

I've never dared to try stardrops, took one look at how toxic it is and put it straight back on the shelf!

I'd rather stick with vinegar/water and ecover cleaner.

Also I tried the bread maker but my white bread was like chewing a sponge and DH won't eat anything but white so not worth making granary bread just for me as I only eat it as toast on weekend...still it went to a freecycler who hopefully uses it more than I did.

Never tried slow cooker as I'm vegetarian and DH is meat-eater so would probably need 2 of them!

That said, there's been loads of other great ideas that I've adopted or modified to fit my life since I joined this site.
There is no issue so small that it can't be blown out of proportion

It would honestly never occur to me to have a family discussion on whether or not to water down the washing up liquid, if I read it as a tip then I'd do it and if people commented on it then I'd either continue or not depending on the feedback.

TBH DD is 21 so we do discuss things, support for me and she is learning in the meantime. That works for us. Not that every one should have discussions like that, but to not tell people I think sometimes is counter productive. My lot would just add more to the water if they didn't understand why it was watered down.;)

I see it this way too, I would rather be frank than try to hide something.
DS is only 3 but he will be taught the ways of OS, and to him OS is good as mummy has more money for new cars and the like ;).

Probably wouldn't occur to me because I do most of the washing up :p
