social media isue....

I work for an agency, within a communications company....a year ago,a new system was introduced,(work itself involves emergency situations)-I was given 1 and quarter hours training.
The system has proplems.which causes errors...An error was made,on my system,I reported it.I wastold 15mins before start of next shjft,I was on suspension pending investigation.
I put on comment on social media, saying suspended, was asked why, explained and said that system ran on wing and prayer-didn't mention, company name, and all in good humour...The initial problem of the investigation has now been swept aside(even though.I was told how serious,it was)and the focus is on the comment....Looks like I will be dismissed-other people who commented, have not been reproached...Very naive of me,as was not told until 24 hrs later that I could not comment about the situation.Any thoughts?

  • You haven't got a leg to stand on. Start looking for another job.
  • I know of many situations where employers have dismissed based on social media comments. Does your employer have a stated HR policy regarding social media? I know many do.
  • It depends...it could go straight to a dismissal as the company may class anything like that as 'gross misconduct' or whoever is the decision maker may look deeper into it and conclude that a lesser evil has been committed due to the non mentioning of the company name (for example) and only give a disciplinary warning. It is not an easy one to guess but it is a very serious matter. When will people learn?

There is no specific procedure, except being told 'but everyone knows'-seems to be different rules for different people, within the same workplace.
  • How long have you been working for this employer? Does your contract with them/employee handbook say anything about use of social media? Or any general rule about saying/doing anything that may bring the company into disrepute?
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

I've been with them 7yrs.....and it's an agency that until there's a problem, you're not aware that you've done anything wrong....You can't go to a intranet rules and regs site,it's on a 'need to know'only basis, wher information about what to do.and not what to do are magically produced as 'fact'...

There is an implied duty of mutual trust and respect between you and your employer. I expect their viewpoint is that slating them on social media breaches this, and I would be inclined to agree.

^^ I'd say this is a far better rule to abide by :D (my amendment in red)
