I think wood surfaces in a bedroom will always be prone to getting marked by pots and creams and oils, so I think your idea or a glass or perspex top was a good one.

What price point were you thinking of? How big is the top of the dresser?

I see sheets of clear perspex cut to order for (I think) quite a reasonable price here.

I think if you lay a sheet of this over the top and either put a nice cloth runner underneath or a sheet of something like these.

What about decoupaging the top of the chest of drawers then varnishing it?

I might try to go down the decoupage route, to get a better edge than sticky backed plastic.... it also means you can have several goes if it looks a bit !!!!!! at first.
  • IKEA do a 'Desk pad' which is just a piece of frosted / opaque plastic that you put on top of a desk to protect it. I got one for the desk in my sons room and as its opaque, it should cover your stain. It's called 'Projs' and it's £4.50. You might be able to cut it to size if too big. It's 65 x 45 cm.
  • Thank you so much for all the great ideas - I'm making a list in order of easiness and will start trying them out.
