'Weird' Postings

These crop up from time to time and they're usually random extracts from other webpages which have been machine-pasted here in order to build up a 'score' for the poster who can (eventually) then post spam links here.

I'm sure there are enough of us here who realise the situation and can just hit the spam button.

Adding comments (even "what a load of spam" ) to the thread might slow down the process of auto-deletion.

Worse still, hitting the thank you button (as some visitors seem to do without thinking :D ) might slow it down even more !

Interestingly, the posting about crushers that was there earlier this morning has been removed but a new version has now arrived. I'll be marking that as spam AND 'reporting it'

Second one (albeit from an allegedly different MSE newbie) was duly removed. Surprise, surprise, yet another posting in same vein has arrived this morning !

Can we all have a quick look at it then (if you agree) hit the spam button. Pointless (& counter-productive ) adding a comment to that thread

I see your Nemesis has just posted again. TBH he/she/it has been starting similar threads most days for months now. I still don't quite understand how they can get threads deleted so many times without getting PPR'd?

It's actually been zapped already (before I got the chance to view & report it !).

Can only assume that the 'new' accounts are all being set up from a different email address (and maybe even a different IP address ?) so are being accepted (just as a new application from a 'real' user would be). But because the admins have been alerted to the problem they may be looking out for repeat attempts and could be fast-tracking the deletions. Hopefully the culprit(s) will get the message eventually.

I think we're at crossed porpoises.

They're not new accounts, it's the same account every time, from memory CHZN888 (or possibly CHNZ888). Opened in August, and only ever has the 1 post (when they open a new thread) before presumably going back to zero each time.

I'd kind of assumed that after a number of SPAM presses somebody looked into it, but I can only assume now that it's being done autonomously as I'd have expected a moderator to have spotted the pattern (account) by now.

I'd previously assumed a moderator was involved as SPAM posts can be deleted from within a thread, without us losing the thread. Perhaps, again, it's automatic if the SPAM post is the first post, the thread gets nuked too.

Nothing important, just me having yet another ponder about how things work. :)

  • Just seen another new thread sand making machine equipment... appear and be quickly zapped. I'll give them credit for persistence.

They're still around. Another forum I frequent was spamed by them for around a month last year before they stopped or were stopped.

Hesitant to add anything to the actual thread but I strongly suspect that a 'new to MSE' poster telling us about a device that could save 25% of our electricity bills has got to be spam.

Since it's apparently some 'new' refrigerant liquid I'd have thought it could only affect the amount of electricity used by any fridges, freezers or aircon units and I very much doubt if many of us even spend 25% of our electricity bills keeping them running

    Amazing !

Not only do we have one new poster extolling the virtues of that product, we now have a second - also new - poster joining the 'debate'.

Has anyone else reported the thread as spam ?
