Agency Won't Put Me Through

Hi Everyone,

I was called today by an agency. I found out that I had actually been interviewed for the position they are offering earlier on in the year but the job then was on with a different agency and now the current agency is refusing to submit my CV. I can understand their concerns as I wasn't offered the position originally but I explained that the only bad feed back I had from the original interview was that I seemed very nervous. I had been very unwell on the day of the interview but decided to attend. Perhaps I should have cancelled.
Would it be very bad practice and frowned upon if I go to the company directly and say I would like to apply again? I would really love this role.

Nothing wrong in calling and asking them explaining the above. They can only say 'dont' bother'.
  • Submit cv direct to company. they don't work for you.
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)
  • This was the reply from the agency when I explain the situation as to why I thought I had been turned down

Unfortunately you would need to go back to the agency that you originally went through, we wont be able to go any further with your application.

We will keep in touch with future positions for you.
  • Maybe it's because if you re-apply and are successful this time, the original agency would be due the introduction fee rather than the current one?
  • Hi

go on give them a call

    Speak to the recruiting manager

Prepare yourself for the call, practise what you are going to say and think about Q's they may ask and have a considered response to each one.

They may want to do interview on the phone so prepare yourself for that, again practise with a fried, this will ease your nerves.

    Prepare:-
    Why you want the job
    Why this company
What skills can you bring to the party (check what skills they are looking for first)
Give real examples of how you can demonstrate these skills (what actually did you do, what was the effect and what would you do differently)

Go for it and have confidence it will shine through
Debt is a symptom, solve the problem.
  • The agency is free to put through whoever they want however their job is to filter applicants and some people, like me, will only allow an agency to send through 2-3 CVs and so they have to be selective and do their job "properly".

So possible issue one, you were rejected before, they dont want to risk sending you through again -v- sending through someone else on their books who doesnt have a history of being rejected

Issue 2, which seems to be the one in this case, the contracts between agents and clients tends to be that monies are due if they take that person on within 6-12 months of the agency doing the introduction. Depending on exact terms it would mean at a minimum the client still has to pay the first agency the referral fee and the new agency may either lose its fee or it may well get it too in which the client is annoyed at having to pay two sets of fees.

There is nothing wrong with you approaching directly but the agency may still get its commission (and make you unpopular with them as it may appear you were trying to cut them out the deal). For all the slating agencies get they can occasionally add value too so may well be worth following the new agencies advice and go back to the original agency
  • Thank you very much to everyone for taking the time to reply. I'm very grateful and now understand why the new agency may have turned me down. I have just been on the original recruiter's website and sure enough the vacancy is there. I would like to do the right thing so will contact them tomorrow and see if they will put me through again. Just also found out the company has moved closer to where I live which would be an added bonus. Please keep your fingers crossed for me. I will keep you updated.

    Thanks again x

    This is the reason.

If you were to be hired, then the original agency could claim they made the introduction. If you approach directly, the company may still have to pay the agency fees (as Inside Insurance says )

It would be worthwhile going back to the original agency and reminding them of the feedback, and explain that you were unwell. You would expect to be perform much more effectively if presented again. If that's a no, you could try the direct approach. You don't really have anything to lose.

Go direct to the company. Most recruitment agents don't know thier a**e from their elbow.
