Google's greener (well, blacker, really) version

You can all do your bit…..see below!!

When your screen is white - an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when its black it consumes only 59 watts. Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with a lower energy consumption, check it out.

I don't think Google created this. It's some guy using the google custom search. Because of this it doesn't have any of the other google functions either. And you can't specify to search in the UK.

Seems a bit daft to me really!

Hmm, do you have a link to the study?

I'd much rather wait till google released a real version.

But if it was true, and tbh it does seem to make sense, then think how much electricity could be saved?

ok, so this version doesn't look so good, but perhaps something in between - at least it's thinking along 'green lines'

This sounds very dubious to me, it might apply to CRT screens but with an LCD the backlight stays on no matter what is being displayed.
I'm also amazed that the OP knows exactly how many watts my PC consumes.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
