  • Every half used bag of potatoes you throw out is money effectively thrown in the bin. Cut the sprouts off, boil and mash them up. Thats usually what I do. Make a bubble and squeak type thing with vegetables that are about to go off. Or make a soup if you have a blender?

    Basically what struggling youth said!

Though, I don't buy massive bags. There is a good price on local potatoes in our tesco, just over a £1 for a bag. That bag lasts us a fortnight, and we don't throw anything. Keeping them in a cupboard, or anywhere cool is meant to help them, though I keep them on a veg rack in the kitchen. I make sure I plan my meals that mean I use up my potatoes. I make wedges to go with homemade burgers, and also make my own healthy chips. Spices on them and they're yummy!

Just to add, wash the skins and roast them and they make healthy snacks for kids.

I've never tried that. Will give it a go when my son is a little older!

  • Hey there :)

If your OH doesn't work far from home, is getting rid of one of the cars and him getting a push bike an option? It'd save on petrol, insurance, finance, maintenance and all the rubbish things that come with car ownership :)

Potatoes - keep them in the dark or they will go green, and you really shouldn't eat them if this happens.

If they are just sprouty, well, lots of ideas above, but you can also peel, cook and mash them, and freeze the mash :) You really can't afford to waste food (none of us can, and even if we could, we shouldn't )

This may have a bit of liquid around it when you defrost, but it is only water and you can drain it away in a sieve or colander. You can then use them to top something like shepherds pie, or alternatively warm through in the micro and serve with sausages or whatever else you are having.

Good luck - in the dim and distant past I was a SAHM too :).
  • Yum! I'm loving the idea of the skins, the kids would love it!
Think before I sat down today and thought this is it I just didn't care about the odd £1 wasted here or there in potatoes or carrots or even meat! So bad I know!

I'm gonna plan this weeks meals around a bag of tatties! That will be a big deal for me.

Dennychomp I wish he would!! I keep saying to him about it but he's a wuss! He needs to man up if you ask me. Just looked on AA Routeplanner and it's 8.9 miles, not sure if that's doable or if I'd be cruel making him cycle that after a days work lol. He drives a lorry and there's a whiskey company right by us so he is always keeping an eye out for work in there cos he could walk to work or definitely cycle so fingers crossed for that!
  • I sound so cruel in my second paragraph there, I'm only joking I must add! What a witch I am.

If your partner is bringing home £300 a week, his yearly wage is more like 17K. Are you getting all the benefits, you're entitled to? Housing benefit? Try getting accurate numbers for your partners wages, and put them into entitledto.com. I'm pretty sure you should be getting a much higher number, if his reduced hours are taken into account.
