Sloe gin..GIN!

Hi

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere but I can't find anything!

I want to try and make sloe gin for the first time - can anyone suggest a good 'recipe' and where is the best (cheapest!) place to buy gin and bottles!

Thank you in advance!

J

I use cheap gin from aldi and use that bottle to make it in too.

Empty the gin out from the bottle and put in enough sloes to fill to about a quarter of the bottle, add enough sugar to cover the sloes and then pour the gin back in. You will have a bit of excess and as I do it in bulk it goes towards the next bottle and so on.
Leave in a dark cool place and shake a few times a day for a week or so. At this stage I add some chopped almonds, you can use almond essence instead but only a very small amount, a couple of drops should do it. Then give it a shake once a day for another week then leave for a couple of months.
Once it's ready drain the sloes out and put them to one side (you can use these to make a boozy pud) and voila homemade sloe gin.

This was my great grandmothers recipe and it tastes delishious. Remember to either stab the sloes first of freeze them over night.
:T Looking forward to the future :T

I use any cheap vodka then empty half of it into another bottle. Add sloes and sugar [ 50/50] until the bottles are full. replace top. leave on a sunny window ledge until all sugar is dissolved. shaker occasionally. if you put the sloes in the freezer for about a week first they give up their juice and flavour more readily
  • Great advice thank you.
  • I was told to 'p.rick' the sloes with a fork when I first made sloe gin a few years ago. I still do that, not sure of it makes much odds but the gin has always been lovely...
