DMP and overdraft- Think I've made big mistake

Options
Hi

I am just starting my DMP with CCCS (who have been excellent). I don't post on here often but do read dailly and the advice given has been invaluable to me. My problem is I think I've made a huge mistake already and don't want kicked off my DMP.

When I opened my new account with A&L I did ask for a basic account but was given a £400 overdraft automatically. I probably should have (and still can) go online and cancel this facility but it would give me major problems right now.

My wages go in on the last Thursday of the month but I don't get my family allowance until about the 10th and my Tax Credits a week after that.

My DMP is calculated on my entire income for the month but as all my essential d/ds (and my payment to CCCS) are paid on the 1st, I obviously go overdrawn until I get the FA and TC payments. It is then sorted again and I am no longer in overdraft.

The amount I go overdrawn by will get a bit less each month until eventually I will have enough in at the start of the month to pay everything and won't be overdrawn at all.

I had not previously thought of this as "additional borrowing" as it is all sorted out by the end of each month and it will be less and less as time goes on but after reading some of the threads on here I now think I am totally wrong.

I just can't risk getting kicked off the DMP and am now desperately worried and upset. I was just starting to think I was getting things on track and don't know what to do.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS I don't know if it helps that I opened this account before any of my creditors were notified of my DMP and before I had actually missed any payments. (Could that be my saving grace?)

Well for starters, why not phone up your lenders and try to switch the date your dd is taken out? Many lenders will happily do this.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

    Hi Lonely2,
I have an overdraft of £500 per month, which the CCCS know about and are fine with.
I was asked at the start if I wanted to add it to my DMP but as it's a Nationwide account and not linked to any of my creditors i decided not too.

The CCCS were happy with this and are aware that I still have the facility on my account, although it gets used less and less nowadays.

I wouldn't worry about it, but if it bothers you that much just ring the CCCS and tell them you have this facility and would it would be OK to use it from time to time.

Good luck with the DMP, I have been on mine since 2004 and have never looked back.

    All the best

Thanks bot of you for the helpful advice.
Sorry if I am being silly but I've never tried to change the date of a d/d before and didn't think about that. I don't seem to be thinking logically at the moment and every little problem is magnified about 1000x in my head and I just keep going over and over things to myself.

My mortgage is paid on the 1st. Do you really think they could change that to 15th!

I so afraid of phoning them in case they say no. (Bit down at the moment and quite likely to cry while still on the phone. I don't want to do that)

    Thanks

  • Yes, your mortgage lender should be able to change the date of your DD without too much fuss.

Why not give them a phone tomorrow and ask if they would be prepared to do that. I know that even the little things can seem like a mammoth task when you're feeling down, but it will give to a great sense of achievement to get it sorted out.

    Debt £171000 - Current Debt £168883
    Between Oct 08 and Apr 09 Pay off £12k = £2117/£12000
    £2 Savings Pot = £8

Thank you. I will do that tomorrow. I think I will also let the CCCS know what I have done. I'm sure things wont seem so bad in the morning! Just got into a bit of state when I read other posts.

    Thanx.

I couldn't face it today but as it's too late for this month anyway, I think I have a week to play with.

    Cheers
