Help regarding 'intention to marry'

Hi all,

Really hoping someone might be able to help with this. I know I need to register my intent to marry, but really not sure who to register this with. Am living in Newcastle, but are getting married in Leicester where we are from. Therefore do we register for Newcastle council or Leicester?

Many thanks in advance!

  • You need to register in Newcastle. We're getting married in York but had to register in London as that's where we live. Then as soon as you've done it ring up the registrar in Leicester to book your date if you haven't already - we didn't as were told we had to register first and the register office in York phoned my OH and basically told him they only had two slots left on the date!

The exception is if you are getting married in an Anglican church, when you don't need to register at all.

Yes you need to register in the district where you live. The town hall where we are getting married reserves the date and time for you for a fee (£25) and then confirms once they receive your notice of marriage from the district where you live. We paid the fee because we couldn't get an appointment to give notice for weeks and weeks and didn't want to lose our date!
  • Ah thanks so much both, that's really helpful!
  • First - Book your date & time with the registrar in the district where you are getting married.
Second - Give Notice of your intention to marry in the district where you live and pay council tax.
Then get on with the fun stuff. X

We've done 1st, but not 2nd yet as OH has no leave left- it can be anything up til about 3 weeks before the day. We'll go in new year to do ours
  • I'm getting married in a church. This is going to sound awful but how do I know what sort of church it is?? I think it is c of e, it's definitely not catholic or Methodist or anything. I don't attend anymore (attended a bit as a child but not with parents so can't ask them) and their website doesn't say, at least not in a way I can make sense of. Is c of e the same as Anglican?

I booked our date months ago with them, and filled in a form containing all sorts of vital info such as what my dad did before he retired. I recently got in contact to check if there was anything else I needed to do and they said not their end. So do I need to do this intention to marry thing, or is that for non religious ceremonies? They mentioned explaining banns nearer the time (wedding is 11 months away), what about banns in our 'home' church, do I need to arrange them?

This is all so confusing! :(
  • C of E and Anglican are the same thing. You will not need to give notice if marrying in one of these, but for any other church denomination you would. Intention to marry is what you do if you live in a different authority to where you are marrying in a non c of E church or civil venue which then gets sent on
