Can the married man/civil partner allowance be presently claimed ?

Tried to look it up on the gov website. Soooooooo confusing !!

  • This ended around 2000, apart from people born in 1935:

"You can claim Married Couple’s Allowance if all the following apply:

you’re married or in a civil partnership
you’re living with your spouse or civil partner
one of you was born before 6 April 1935"

    https://www.gov.uk/married-couples-allowance/eligibility

There has been talk that it might be re-instated for younger people, but nothing definite.

    Is this correct ?
  • If you are over 79 years old you can claim it. If you are under 79 then no

Were you born before 6 April 1935?
Are you married or in a civil partnership?
Are you living with your spoce or civil partner?

Can you answer yes to the three above questions?

As hubby born in 1943 and me born 1952 we are not eligible for married couples allowance.
  • Here is something about possible changes for FY 2015/16, however it is just before the next general election so I would not count on anything:

This is proposed for 2015/16 tax year (has 2014 finance act received royal assent yet?) where a taxpayer can transfer up to 1050 of his or her personal allowance so long as neither pay higher rate tax.

It is not married man's allowance though as the op has suggested.
