What should I do?

Options
Hi everyone :-)

To cut a long story short, this is my problem:

My manager is getting rid of colleague at the end of this week. She has known I wanted that person's job from when it was first advertised, but I was told I shouldn't apply at the time as they didn't want to lose me from my current position. I was informed last Friday my colleague was being sacked (and interviews for their replacement had already been lined up) by a member of staff from another department. My manager has purposely hidden this from me so I didn't have the chance to apply!

By coincidence, I had applied for another job within my building (I work for a contractor) and had been invited to interview the day before I found out my colleague was being let go. I just had the interview today, but I don't think it went well :-(

I really wanted this job anyway, but even more so now I have found out my manager/company have been keeping this other vacancy hidden!

I've been told it could take up to 2 weeks before I know if I've been successful (which unfortunately I don't think I have :-() so I would still like to apply for the vacancy within my company.

My question is how do I go about broaching this subject with my manager? By the time 2 weeks is up and I find out if I have the other job, they will have already filled the position I originally wanted!

I hope that makes sense! :rotfl:

If your manager thought you were a suitable candidate, I am sure she would have advised you of the vacancy and suggested that you apply.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Go for the internal job. thye have been sneeky hiding it from you but they probably did not want the person to find out they were on the way out.

untill you get both you don't have any choices to make

I am a more than suitable candidate (not being biased in any way). The job is EXACTLY the same as my position, the only difference being that I would have to travel to different offices as and when required (not a problem as I drive and most of the offices are within 5 mins walk of each other).

They didn't want me to apply originally as I was the only full-time member of the team and they said they couldn't "afford" to lose me.

Basically, they get me to do my job for next to nothing and it's easier for them to keep me where I am!

Then in their eyes, you are not a suitable candidate, as you are already in the position that they believe fits best in the organisation.

I'm not unsympathetic, but these days employers do not have to be fair, and there are few rules they have to adhere to.

The person in question had a meeting with our manager about a week ago and was aware that they were being asked to leave. Everybody has been keeping quiet about it and I'm 99% sure it's so I didn't find out and start asking if I could apply for their job. I'm glad it kind of backfired for them as I told them I had an interview for another company! BUT if I don't get that job, I'm stuck with my current job, feeling like !!!! over the way they've treated me and resenting the new person that comes in :(

I completely understand why they're doing this, it's purely a business move. But it just really makes me upset and angry that I asked to apply and was told not to (which they can't actually stop me from doing) and since then they've had two failed candidates in the role, when I know I could be doing a much better job!

Instead of letting me have a small promotion in the company (not that it's really any different from my current position) they are driving me away and making me resent them! Hence me applying and getting an interview for another job within my building for a different company.

I work good hours, have a very easy job, next to the train station/town centre and get paid a bit over minimum wage...I know they would have plenty of applicants to choose from if I was to leave or if they moved me to this other role.

It's getting to the point that I'm sick of my company and the way they have been operating recently and can't wait to find another job! :(

    I've been Money Tipped!
OP - you are regularly on here talking of how unfair your employer is etc.

Just put all your energies into moving on. Why would you even want to stay with them after you feel they have treated you so badly?

I have just spoken with my colleague who is leaving and she wasn't let go, she handed her notice in. She had no idea that we didn't know she was leaving, she just assumed that we knew.

I told her everything that's happened and she couldn't believe how they've been treating me. She told me that the job was awful and she had been thinking about leaving for a while. She agreed with you and said it wasn't worth it and I should start looking elsewhere for work.

I guess it's the fear of leaving a secure job and moving somewhere terrible, or not finding another job that is keeping me where I am :(

Why on earth did you do that?
What was the rational behind telling them?
What was the expected benifit to you?

Yeah look elsewhere if you don't like the job you're doing.

They obviously don't beleive that you're suitable for the other position, someone should have the balls to tell you that.

I had to tell them, it was for an internal interview with short notice, so I would have to take an hour out of work. I work on the reception desk for a large company, but the reception desk staff are employed by a contractor. I was having my interview with the large company so had to get permission from my manager (contracted company) to take time off.

It wasn't that I was telling them to make a point, I had to let them know what I was doing as it's in the same building. It was only after I found out what was going on in my company that I was glad I told them.
