Under Auto Enrolment rules you don't get tax relief if you don't pay tax so the Government won't be putting anything into your fund I am afraid.

    See
    https://www.gov.uk/workplace-pensions/what-you-your-employer-and-the-government-pay

"However, even if you don’t pay Income Tax, you’ll still get tax relief if your pension scheme uses relief at source to add tax relief to your pension pot."

Whilst no doubt it is a complete pain you are able to opt out. I believe if you contact the pension provider within 30 days you are entitled to a refund. If you contact them after 30 days you can stop contributions but can't get a refund of what's already been paid in.
(Well that's my understanding of how NEST works so I guess yours is similar?).

  • Being pedantic, if you put in £40 and employer does the same then you will end up with £90 in fund - tax is only added on employee bit.

This is not correct - Tax relief is added on both employee and employer contributions. Current minimums make up 2%, consisting of 1% for the employer, 0.8% for the worker and 0.2% as tax relief.
