Re-taking GCSE's, where to start?

Options
At 27, I want to re-take GCSE's, but Googling brings up so many questionable results and companies.

Usually, for a mature person wanting to resit his GCSE/similar, what are the usual choices, time Lengths and costs etc?

Appreciate any help.

Do you have a local adult education centre? These often offer the main GCSEs.

Perhaps look at your local council website or do an internet search for adult education in your area.

These guys are fantastic. ( http://www.examtuition.com/study.php ) If for some reason, you don't get a A- C grade, they refund you! A relative did her GCSCs via this company and was pleased with the results.

It's done via distance learning and you can sit your exam at a local college.
  • NVQ would be miles better. How on earth are GCSEs going to be of any value when a a degree in this climate is no licence to the office chair?

    Waste of time.

Completely understand this, and whilst I feel qualified for certain things, it seems that without the GCSE's they don't even want to take a look.

I went back to my local tertiary college to do my GCSEs in my early twenties after leaving school with nothing. Best decision I ever made.

Is it just English and maths you need? An adult literacy and numeracy level 2 certificate might serve the purpose as an equivalent.

unless you have a plan where GCSEs are needed then you might be better spending your time doing something else.

Being a mature student, many Uni will accept you without GCSEs or even if you have them will want you to sit a foundation degree course anyway.

It can depend on your aspirations but many people will ask for at least a grade C in GCSE Maths and English

    Thanked everyone, great help!

My reasons were that whilst I have some time between jobs and moving back home I wanted to start from the bottom i.e GCSE's that give me something. My jobs have given me experience but nothing in terms of qualifications.
