Is this on a letter from HMRC? Or on your payslip?

It isn't a letter normally added to your tax code but it could be your NI category

950LX is the code 950L operated on a week 1 / month 1 basis - absolutely nothing to do with NIC

  • A week 1 / month 1 code should have w1 or m1 after it. Not an X

Depends on the payroll software. Purdyoaten is correct 950L on a week1/month 1 basis.

    What software?

Several packages cannot cope with the M1, W1 suffix and use 'X'. Have a read:

  • What software?

    Is that really relevant?

When I worked for a recruitment agency 12 years ago it was shown like that, I think the software was Tempaid? Or Temps? Used that many in my time can't be sure.

Also when you get a P6 or P9 coding notice from HMRC the month 1 week 1 indicator is always X

You are correct - it is not relevant at all! Wrong advice is the worst of all advice.

what was it before Oct 2013?

have you changed job this year ?

did you receive a letter for HMRC explaining the code?

do you know why your code is 950 rather than the more usual 944?
i.e. do you claim a uniform cleaning allowance or similar?

There are many reasons why your code could be being operated on a W1/M1 basis. Without knowing the full circumstances it is not possible to explain why. I think the best advice is to contact HMRC for a proper explanation.

You would need to call HMRC to establish why you have been placed on a week 1 / month 1 code. This essentially means that any change to your PAYE code has been made on a non-cumulative basis. So in October and each month thereafter, it is treated as being your first month of employment, ignoring your income and any allowances used up until that point in the tax year.
