It could be down to the type of bank account originally signed up to and their T&C's might have a clause stating "I will pay a minimum of £XXX into this bank account each month". If this money isn't hitting the account, then the bank might call in the OD.

Chances are if people did talk about money, many would discover their best mates, you know the ones - who always have the new car, latest gadgets and the multiple overseas holidays each year, etc. - its all on credit.

    Good evening JustAboutThere.

Thank you for explaining the O/D rules. I think I'm ok with that, since all my money goes into my current account to which the O/D is attached. I really cannot wait to clear it as I know that, they could re-call it at any time :(

I think it's very, very sad that people 'need' to acquire stuff in order to feel accepted by others. For me it was more to do with how I felt rather than anyone else. I have read a few posts about people in relationships hiding each other's debts and felt a lot of empathy for them.

Today, I spoke no a neighbour of mine who complained about condensation in her house. She asked me whether I have the same problem? Well, I don't, but then, I line-dry all our clothes ( even in winter time-call it freeze-drying :) ) I know I am very lucky to have an outdoor space with a car-port, but so does my neighbour. I honestly cannot remember the last time I dried wet clothes indoors. Sometimes it takes a while for the clothes to dry completely, but I do get there eventually.

Apart from my earlier outing, I've stayed away from any spending temptations :) I have no reason to go shopping tomorrow and intend to go for a long walk ( weather permitting.) I am also re-discovering joys of meditation which I used to practice a lot when I was going through my divorce ( it really helped with keeping myself centred and in the now.)

Right, I better serve up our supper. I wish you all a wonderful evening :)

    Warmly,

Hi, I don't have anything to add to help with your finances but wanted to say that you sound like a lovely lady and a great mum! Good luck, I hope you are debt free soon, Charlotte.

    Good evening Charlotte.

Thank you so much for your kind comment ( it really helped to lift my spirits :) )

As I progress through my debt journey, I hope to grow and learn, not only about being sensible financially, but also about myself and what my triggers are.

I wish you a wonderful evening.

    Warmly,

    Trishia.

    Good morning all :)

Last night, I was sorting out various items for car-boot-sale I intend to do very soon and was struck by the amount of clothes I have amassed! Honestly, I could go for years without buying anything new (which I will by the way.)

Today I am intending to go out for a long walk, or a bike-ride ( most probably walk since my bike needs a service, but I first have to save up for it. ) When I come back, I need to do some batch cooking ( chilli con carnie ,leek and potato soup.) I am also helping someone with their move, and as a thank you, they gifted me a beautiful French red wine ( I might drink some of it tonight :) )

I rarely buy alcohol. This is not because I don't like it, but as I got older my tolerance levels have gone down. In practice this means hungover from two glasses of wine! :( Still, at least I don't have to concern myself with the cost of it :) Most of my friends and family are very light drinkers anyway, consequently, I don't feel like an outcast when I don't drink around them.

The weather has been really lovely and sunny here. I think spring is on its way ! Some of my winter baskets look rather scraggly and I have been tempted to go into my local garden centre to get some winter bedding plants, but so far I've resisted :) In fact, as I live in a small town, full of charming shops ( plus two temples of consumerism) whenever I go out ( not including planned grocery shopping) I force myself to leave my purse at home. So far this is working like a charm :)

Right, I better get on with my morning...

I wish you all a wonderful day.

  • good morning, enjoying your story, good luck!

you come across as a warm, calm person.

I have recently read a little book, "Buddha in blue jeans" it has really helped me in appreciating now, instead of mourning the past and worrying about the future.

I too am making the most of the 2 council tax free months, DS school trip first half paid:) £220 to find by end of april plus spending money.

I am sticking to my don't buy clothes challenge, wow it is more difficult than I thought!

just earned £38 cashback on my house insurance. Have you ever used top cash back ? highly recommend it.

look forward to your posts, have a lovely day, off out with dog whilst the sun is shining!

    Good morning asparagus1968.

It sounds like you are managing to earn money, rather than spend it! I think that's great :)

I've not ever looked into 'top cash back', but now you've mentioned it, I definitely will today.

I know what you mean about not buying clothes! It used to be that, I would buy, let's say, a dress ( which I didnt need nor could I afford) then the guilt would kick in, but I would tell myself: " I feel bad, but at least I look good!" Lather, rinse, repeat... This I've done, not only with clothes, but also with other things which I simply 'could not live without.'

Well, as it turned out, I can happily live without acquiring new stuff! In fact, the less I have the lighter and happier I feel :) I have plenty of stuff ( including clothes) to last me until my death-bed! Honestly, apart from essential, perishable stuff that needs to be replaced ever so often, I will not buy anything new ( when I say 'new' I mean new to me, not brand new.) I am re-learning the joys of simple life ,after all, the best things in life do come for free: Love, laughter, sun, clouds, wind, the moon, stars, music, nature and animals, all it's free of charge and yet, so very precious. I appreciate that for some people struggling with money this isn't helping and that's ok. However, for me, whenever I felt like pits, I would look at the sky and remind myself that, 'Everything is going to work out fine. That the sun is still shining, or that the rain is still falling from the sky.'

The only advice that I can give you is, do not go into shops! If you don't see it, it doesn't exist :)

So, as planned, yesterday I did not spend any money at all. Today I am taking my car for service, but as it's a work lease car ( I'm essential car user) I don't pay for it. Well, I do pay for it, but that's out of my wages, which is fine, as I do a lot of miles and prefer to have hassle free motoring.

I am still helping someone out with moving, but must get some studying in! Oh yes, my lovely daughter is feeling much better today :)

I wish you all a wonderful day.

  • Really enjoying reading this thread. Sounds like you are a really happy person with a great life. My problem is internet shopping. We live at least 30 minutes drive from the nearest shops, so don't go out very often to them, but it is so easy to use the credit card on Amazon etc. Reading your last post, I am going to be really strict with myself and not use my card again. I am a paper crafter and we love to buy new supplies, so this is going to be difficult! Ali x

Oh yes, forgot to mention my 'genius' idea!

Since I'm coeliac I must avoid gluten. As it is, most shop bought specialist gluten-free foods are rather uninspiring...and expensive! This is especially true for breakfast cereals ( why??) So, I came up with my own idea for a delicious and most importantly safe muesli.

One bag of basic rice-crispies mixed with basic nuts and seeds with a pinch of cinnamon. Simple, cheap and deliciously :)

Have you checked approved foods, they seem to have a lot of gluten free products & as they are close to or just past sell by date they are much cheaper than regular shops

    Good morning Craftyali.

Thank you for your kind comment :)

It took me a very long time to realise that, whatever I was doing with my life wasn't working, and thankfully I 'woke up.' I still have a way to go, especially with sorting my debts out, but I'm full of faith that I will get there with time. Apart form taking care of my own well-being, I really want to be a good role model for my two children and teach them that there's life beyond money.

I fully understand your point about perils of internet shopping ( easily done.) I found that, sometimes I bought things out of boredom. I would sit on my laptop, browsing Amazon or other shopping sites, and before I knew it, mindlessly spent money on stuff that I didn't need.

Nowadays ( whenever I feel temptation) I quickly distract myself with something else, or just sit there observing my thoughts and feelings without acting on them ( they always pass.)Also, I have created a screen-saver which reads, ' Out of sight, out of mind' which serves as a reminder Not To Buy a Thing.

It sounds like you are very creative-how wonderful! I wonder whether you could perhaps make a deal with yourself to only buy supplies once you've run-out, but not before?

It can be a daily struggle ( I know all about it :( ) to resist the pull of consumerism, but I take each day as it comes... and hope for the best! This isn't even about not liking shopping, but rather moving away from the misplaced notion of ' I buy, therefore I am.' Also, I have a strong urge to simplify my life and take it right back to the basics.

Whenever I look at my cats I think to myself: ' They don't need anything else, apart from food, warmth and shelter. They don't worry about their status' (I'm yet to come across a cat that says to another cat, ' Your fur is more lush than mine! I must buy better conditioner!' ) Much like everything else in nature, they just are.

With that in mind, I am intending to not spend any money today and must tidy up my poor garden which has been lashed by the strong wind and heavy rain. Followed by more research and studying!

I wish you a wonderful, hopefully dry day.

    Warmly,

    Trishia.
