Many supermarkets now have a 'world foods' aisle, full of goodies such as sauerkraut and ackee. If your country's cuisine sits in these aisles, which products are the best value?
Big thanks to forumite terra ferma for asking this question. It's a great discussion so we've turned it into a Which World Foods can you recommend? Hunt.

I have a question for those people who come from countries the 'ethnic aisles" cater for, in particular Asian and Polish.
My local Sainsbury's has a good selection and I like to try things, but I would like to hear from people who actually come from those countries as they know what is good quality and closer to the food that is actually eaten in those countries.

I shall be watching this thread as I like to try out different ethnic foods.
The ethnic section at your Sainsburys may include KTC tinned tomatoes, which are much better than the value brand but at around the same price - you may not find them with all the other tinned tomatoes.
Polish sweets and chocolate are nice for a change - Gryzysky (may not be accurate spelling) is a chocolate covered wafer which is quite nice but they have another called Jazyski (spelling) which is a delicious chewy caramelly type bar- plain or coconut.
I like Halva but can't often obtain it. Also pastourma (or passama) - a spicy beef sausage eaten by greeks and others - is impossible to locate.0 -
A small Polish grocery store opened just round the corner from me on Saturday. Haven't been in it yet as I don't know what they sell etc.
I too will be interested in any Polish items to look out for.0 -
Great idea for a thread I too will be watching in interest.0

i'm from Belarus but buy Polish food as I like it and it reminds me of home. sliced sausages (nice meaty flavour), kefir (smth I was drinking since I was a baby and loving it), wafers, crisps ( a bit expensive), winiary mayo(nice and thick as I like it),kucharek seasoning is great for cooking ( I add it to everything) ,mini tyrolska (my 3 y o loves it reminds me chopped pork just not as greasy) , pate sausage (my old style in-laws who r Scottish and don't like foreign food loved it), twarog (is like pressed cottage cheese), hochland triangle cheese (dif flavours-really nice, soft, spreadable)
pricewise -- not always cheap, hardly any offers like B1G1F. Polish shops carry biscuits that are very similar to Jaffa Cakes. But they come in more flavours! Orange, cherry, strawberry and raspberry, even noticed a kiwi one the odd time. Can't remember the name but the picture is on the package.
Dark chocolate is brilliant.
Jars of red cabbage and horseradish mayo are what we always pick up.
Oh, nearly forgot the cup a soup individual packs are great as well, not too salty and a nice thick soup, not a broth with veg.0 -

It must be the Wedel brand you are referring to! They really are delicious and, if you are ever in Krakow, you must visit the Wedel Chocolate Lounge - you'll think you are in heaven!"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -
I have brought the red cabbage and beetroot, so nice Mosso brand. Need to buy some more now all gone!0

Winiary mayonnaise is delish, also keep your eye out for mayonnaise with horseradish, like a really creamy creamed horseradish and lovely with smoked fishPlease forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

Wedel make those delicious strawberry and raspberry cream filled chocolates - well tasty.0 -
A bit off topic I suppose but if you're a beer drinker I heartily recommend Polish beers. They're mostly of the lager type and are far superior to similar products made in Western Europe. Just look at the tin carefully because they are usually stronger too (in some case a lot stronger - around 7.5% abv)0
