What's the cheapest where?

Options
Now I know there's a thread on here about who shops at a number of different supermarkets each fortnight and many people haven't got the time or facilities to do so. However, for those of us who have got a range of supermarkets nearby and do use all of them at least occasionally I thought a thread about what to buy where might be helpful.

I'm excluding things available in a value range (unless you know the item can be bought cheaper elsewhere and tastes as good) and those items on special offer for a week or two. I've only got a small list and several things will only apply to the minority of people but here goes:

Peppermint teabags - been paying £1.50 for 80 bags in Asda (cheapest alternative I've found is 99p for 40 other supermarket own brand).

Rooibos teabags - again £.150 for 80 in Asda

Free range eggs - £2 for 15 in Asda (I know that many people won't want that many though).

2pt milk 79p in Aldi and Lidl (seems to be 89p in other supermarkets)

1pt milk 45p in Aldi and Lidl (seems to be 45p in other supermarkets)

It's cheaper to do the £1 for 4 pint offer in many supermarkets I know, but not everyone wants/needs large quantities.

I'm sure others will come up with much better ideas than mine.

In Tesco last week I found packs of 2 large naan bread for 20p with the chilled Indian ready meals - I thought it was an error! Have stocked up in freezer!

Extra lean mince in Asda at £6.67 per kg (£5 pack). Very good price for less than 5% fat.

ETA: Now even cheaper in Tesco!

Just thought of another - cucumber in Aldi is regularly around 45 -49p versus the big supermarkets which can be 60p+. Also, Aldi is cheapest I can find for tinned tuna chunks in brine at 72p (I hate tuna flakes but these might be cheaper still elsewhere).

I now buy my herbs and spices from Aldi too (I think Lidl's are a similar price and they may do a wider range). Aldi's only do a few - can't remember them all but they include mixed herbs, cinnamon, ginger and they're about 49p. A similar size pot in Tesco can be 95p for the same thing (own brand).
  • Bananas and spring onions are both wildly cheaper at Aldi than Asda, usually 60p cheaper on both.

  • Another one - smartprice malt vinegar only 21p in Asda (cheaper than Aldi which is 23p!). Great for adding to the fabric conditioner drawer in the washing machine. Softens clothes really well, cheaper than fabric conditioner and no it doesn't leave your house smelling like a chip shop - the smell fades quickly and no smell is left when the clothes are dry. Especially good for softening towels if you don't have a tumble dryer.
  • Why not just use https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk The 2nd tab on the top gives you savvy buys and you can compare prices on these supermarkets -Asda. Sainsburys, Tesco, Waitrose, Aldi and also Ocado. Morrisons unfortunately aren't on there yet BUT hopefully may be when they start delivering nationwide. Just hover over each item for any cheaper finds in other supermarkets.
