Matalan are doing some hot water bottles with some lovely covers including fairisle red so that might keep him warm and in the spirit of things? £6 from memory.
  • Despite being grumpy does he have a sense of humour? My grandpa is grumpy about Christmas due to finding it tiring/too much effort and proudly wears his 'bah humbug' hat with pride in December, he also outs up a Christmas tree with lights and one single decoration I brought him- a green bauble with 'roll on January' written on it!
Best wins in 2013 £200 and Mini iPad. 2014 no wins. 2015 2 nights 5* hotel with £300 vouchers plus £1150 Harrods gift card
Rehome an unwanted prize or gift with a seriously ill child through Postpals.co.uk
  • A flask? So he can have hot tea/coffee without having to boil the kettle every time. Hot water bottle? Or a wheat bag if he has a microwave?

Not sure about food as some of this would probably need refrigerated but what about puddings like bread and butter pudding, steamed sponges etc.

How nice are you? My dad was exactly the same, God bless his soul. A nightmare to buy for. When he passed away we found about 20 years worth of unopened presents we'd all given him.:(
My FIL is like this, we have learned not to buy anything too "gifty" as it will never leave the packaging!

OP, you could be describing him. I will watch this thread with interest.

One idea I had this year is a lap tray, the sort with beanbag underneath; he has a lot of "TV dinners" in his armchair & I know it will get used. BHS have some nice retro ones here (wait until BHS have another so called 'spectacular' & have a discount code...)

I bet he loves the gifts even if he moans (as he moans more if you don't)

My Dad always took his presents back first shopping day after Christmas LOL It was a family joke that he always wanted to check there wasn't something he liked better- so we always bought from M&S and considered it a victory if he came back from his post Christmas jaunt with the presents we had chosen for him. He did see the funny side too ....but still did it every year bless him.

Think I'd do your Dad a winter warmer hamper ....his favourite nibbles ....a port and stilton set if he likes those , a nice jumper, a dvd or two and one of those £10 very bright Christmas jumpers from Matalan to make a point ;)

    Some good ideas :)

Think humbugs may be a good idea for the jar of sweets:rotfl:

Good to see he's not the only miserable old man at Christmas!

I remember when I was a kid I would give him his presents (after he crawled out of bed in the afternoon-we weren't allowed to do anything until then),he'd unwrap them then put them straight to the side of his chair without even looking :rotfl: wouldn't say a word!

  • What about an armchair caddy/tidy to keep his remotes in one place and holds a beer? Long johns!? Google tv shows from his era or just ask what he used to enjoy watching, See if you can get a box set
