I've only ever once gone into an HSBC branch to deposit a cheque in one of those machines, I don't phone 0845 numbers as I don't have a landline and I only use the postal service if I absolutely have to. Hence me thinking that it's not possible/very difficult to do these things.

I applied for the loan over the internet, why can't I get a settlement figure or pay lump sums over the internet? They ARE making it difficult to do these things.

Because they don't want you to pay the loan off early.

So yes I agree they make it a (little) bit more difficult, but you got to play the game and in the end you will save some cash my friend.
