I wonder if new technology, far from being a learning toll, is dumbing people down. More fun to text, use facebook or play video games than studying.0

Well it seems the problem is being clever is just the capacity to remember facts for a short term, to which I am useless.
All I know is that my memory is atrocious, but i've met people who are about 10 years my junior who have recently got Straight A's in their GCSE's and they certainly don't seem intelligent!
I guess young girls have always been interersted in celebrity and vanity, but it seems to be ALL people think about now. It completely consumes their thoughts. ''Kardashians....she's pretty.....hot or not videos......TOWIE''.
There's probably a million reasons as to why we seem to be getting dumber with each generation. Technology, education, Social factors etc. Who knows.
And the findings seem to confirm what i've experienced when I go abroad, though. Young People in the rest of Europe (and amazingly even America) just seem so much smarter than over here.0 -
I've worried about education since I saw certificates being handed out for effort rather than attainment.
When the local primary was going through a very rough patch I was one worried mum, until my parents yanked my leash. If I was *that* worried, they said, go & become a School Governor.
I did, and my appreciation of how much teachers have to do on what a budget changed. From "we're doomed" to "we achieve so much!"
I don't blame teachers for poor literacy & numeracy rates - they are trying hard and in some cases you can have a four year span of understanding & capability in one class. That is *very* tough to teach, and so teachers get criticised.
If our 16-24 year olds are so bad, internationally, we need to do more with the very young & we've begun doing that. The ones who want to succeed at 16-24 can choose to try yet harder as the old gag is absolutely true. "If you thought your math teacher was tough, wait til you have a boss."0 -
So the middle-class parents who are stumping up a decent proportion of income to put their kids in childcare will be those dragging down the maths attainment average?
Dream on.
Oh yes, sorry I forgot, education of children has a direct correlation to how much money their parents have0 -

Confirmation of what we suspected. Young people just aren't that smart. Little wonder they end up renting.
Too much time spent on Mobile phones/iPads and too little time studying.

Why do the educationalists assure us, year after year, that examination standards are just as high as they always have been, against a background of the most obscene upward trend in pass marks and grades as far back as I can remember.0

The real thickos are the ones who responded seriously to the OP. Obvious troll is obvious.0

I suppose a young people bashing thread makes a change from boomer bashing threads, but seriously we shouldn't tar them all with the same brush.
My daughter has an excellent standard of spelling and grammar despite coming from; do i dare say it; a northern city:eek:0
