Just wanted to alert people to some dodgy tactics being used by some colleges and 'uni's' offering the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and CPE (conversion course). Some of these courses often over recruit students (to get funds in) but use the extra numbers as fail fodder. The people with jobs in Law already and those with sponsoring firms (especially those with a Training Contract) are treated far more favourably when it comes to exam time. Those involved will deny this to the death. But be aware - you have been warned! If you find this hard to believe ask those who are about to take your money how many without training contracts pass the exams. Then check the figures before letting your money go. Also count your fingers. Good luck!

Have you ever thought that those already involved in law will have a better knowledge than those who aren't when it comes to exam time? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

And perhaps those with training contracts have more of an incentive to work hard, as they will lose their training contract (which are very hard to get) if they fail their exams.0

Marking of the exams will be anonymous, so how do they know which student has a TC?0
-
Why would they want to deliberately lower their results? Or are you suggesting they pass students that shouldn't pass simply because they have a TC lined up?
As the SRA appoint external examiners to check how each LPC provider assesses their students I would be very surprised if the results were being falsified. What proof do you have that they are doing this?0 -
It is, however, a fact that far more students are recruited to these courses than there are jobs available for them.0

I don't believe a word of this, for the reasons outlined by other posters.
This sounds like nothing more than sour grapes for the poster or a person known to them.0 -

The same for every industry / course. Don't forget, the uni's don't offer a guaranteed job at the end of the course like many private training providers who offer IT courses.
Then you'll always loose a few students - they either leave for whatever reason or get chucked off the course.
I see your reply as a non-starter to be honest. While I don't doubt that there are odd things in legal circles, I very much doubt that they're able to intercept exams and have the results adjusted.
That said, a few years back if you'd said there was a national anti-builder database operated by all the large building companies I wouldn't have believed it either. Look what McAlpine and the other naughty boys were doing though!0 -
I had to laugh. I can see many of the contributors have not actually attended one of these 'courses'. The heads of the course know precisely who has a Training Contract and who has not. In fact the 'upstanding' institution I attended went out of their way to make all attendees fill out a form to state precisely this. (After they git the cash). And as for the sour grapes comment - you bet. Who would like being shamelessly ripped off . I say ask them the questions and get answers before you give them any money. And watch out as they target foreigners, ethnics and mature students. Good luck.0

But you still haven't told us how you think the exam paper markers are marking up annonymous entrants.0
-
They are not anonymous. Each centre marks its own papers. Only a few are sent outside to ensure quality and consistency. The majority (nearly all) of those with TC's are given easy marking (benefit of the doubt) and those without made to resit on some pretext or other. Easy.0
