  • You'll never truly know, unfortunately.

I'm just thinking off the top of my head: are the ID documents you used 'valid'? i.e. if you presented a passport/driving licence for ID, are they current and not reported lost/stolen or anything? It could be as simple as using the wrong driving licence/passport if you 'lost', 'reported' and then 'found' it again?? I've no idea what lengths banks go to check ID.

I don't think this is acceptable in a transparent democracy...I know secret courts and laws are all the rage right now, but I want to know what criteria I am getting refused on..would a SARS request help, specifically asking for the reason for rejection?

My ID is solid, can't be anything there...these problems definitely started after I defaulted on a Halifax account around 7 years ago, I went over my overdraft by £20 and suddenly owed them £300..Lowell picked up the debt

They are using some sort of secret list for banks

Wouldn't be something that simple, I was in an IVA and still got a coop basic account, no problem, they even gave me a savings account, after first been auto rejected, one letter and they changed there mind, you can obtain the information through a "freedom of information request" although im unsure how to start the process, try googleing it maybe ?

You don't think it acceptable that a business is allowed to decide who it deals with, or you think that a business should be forced to explain its business decisions to any Tom, !!!!!! or Harry who demands to know?

Personally, I think that a company should be free to deal with, or decline, anyone that they like, for any reason that they like.
  • there should be some alternative when receiving salary instead of going into bank as mandatory. these banks are taking everything for granted.

bank should be transparent and SAR or FOI should apply to them 100% because they are handling public money.

sorry for my little education ;)

but it's not just a company is it? everyone needs basic account to accept wages, or even take benefit payments..that changes things a little...and if you are rejected from 5 different banks, obviously for the same reason which you do not know, then yes I have a right to know

exactly..they are not private anymore, they are mainly public owned, so no they can't refuse you without giving a reason

A freedom information request relates to public data at public bodies, not individual data.

You could do a subject access request to the bank that declined you but I doubt it will provide you with any further information than you already have.

You could try obtaining your data from CIFAS and national hunter directly (via Subject access requests), although these may still not answer your query.

The UK banks are still private companies in business to make a profit.
A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give
or "It costs nowt to be nice"
  • Just ask them. They should give you a reason if it's not to do with your credit files.

it's nothing to do with CIFAs, I checked National Hunter..my guess? The address on the Equifax file is out-of-date, which is failing my ID check...see it would be good to f*cking know this, so I can have it updated...but no, everything is secrecy and I have to guess
