This Time I'm Really Going To Do It

Half marathan run. And in the time I wanted too. Still here. Am thinking a new diary might be in order.
Sort of Watty's return journey to financial freedom. Certainly could do with somewhere to muse. Not sure this diary is the right place now as big change in attitude.
Would I have overpaid with the benefit of 20/20 perfect vision of hindsight? No, not without a financial agreement in place with the OH. The financial abuse stuff on here recently was revealing. Financial abuse comes in many guises. It started with gently sidesteppping the agreement before we moved in together. So gently I never really noticed and hey it didn't matter because we were going to get married .... to the wedding that never happened .... to the encouragement that I should overpay everything that I earnt into a joint mortgage and not really plan my retirement properly because "we were together" and he had a great pension in his workplace so fine to use my money to overpay our mortgage then the inheritances, small ones, overpaid on the mortgage and then his inheritance gifted in part to his nephews and the rest "retained" and when I suggested it be used to clear the outstanding mortgage on the rental property he was "not sure it was the right thing to do"
And somewhere the gradual awakening. And so now I need to plan my financial future. Late I know. But I need to do it. I've been reading on the pensions board ... scarey lot over there LOL and I think a combination of reading there and posting away here might just focus my mind. Plus I get you lovely lot as cheerleaders.
So here... not down .. not out ... and about to pick up the reins and sort my finances to suit me this time around .....Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!0 -
I will be here to cheer you on Watty. Next on my list (maybe next year) is financial planning for retirement as things are different for me now too. If you start a new thread please put a link here, I don't always look on the main thread and tend to catch up on the diaries I follow.
Hope all is well with you xMFW 2025 No. 7 £1130/£1200

I too have been venturing into the pensions and investments boards. Scarey lot, ruthless lot, brutal with their observations. Its like the dark web of financial forums, and I've dared not post out of fear!
Research over there, and post your thoughts/plans over here. Best of both worlds, and its much kinder over here!MFW: Was: £136,000.......Now: £47,736.58......0 -
Hiya Watty - I'm so sorry the financial abuse things ring bells for you
but glad you got back here. I confess, I've rarely been over to the pensions board on here - but I need to, I need to sort what to do with what pension funds I have. Whatever, sorry. Definitely here to cheer you on, in sorting your financial future and making sure that you're living the life you want to live.

Definately. After a lot of reading I decided that I would start with a basic I got from over there which is calculate how much you actually need to maintain your current standard of living.
Hurrumph.
Lets just say my current standard of living will mean I can never retire! However there are areas I could save money based on the assumption that when I retire I could do my own cleaning and so on. So I have an upper wouldnt it be wonderful if figure and a lower scrap by figure.
Once that was done I went to a local airshow but in MSE style I did not pay to go in but parked up along the side of the road and just watched the planes fly over and folk jump out and so on then, bored with that, I decided a cup of tea and scone would be just the thing and so stopped at the local church. £5 spent but it went to a very good cause. Came home and reviewed the figures again and yes, I think I have everything covered. So a starting point made.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Thanks KC.
On the whole I’m an optimistic sort and what’s done is done. Yes, I would do things differently now. But looking forwards I’m going to sort myself out I no longer pay anything towards mortgage on BTL (but I do snaffle the income). I no longer contribute to any of his living expenses and whilst we still have a joint account I do not put money in other than my half of the bills. He is using a covert sort of shrugging and what’s done is done and justifying. Whatever. I just say I disagree and he can tell whatever stories he likes.
Beware a woman in revolt especially when she is in revolt on the QT. From this regular readers will realise we are still sharing a house. And indeed we are. But, again, this year I have been working on a plan.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
