Hi I recently looked into learning a second trade, after getting in contact with a few different courses and companies I got almost pressured into signing up to a plumbing course run by new carer skills.i had a phone call Friday evening and a sales person came round and "interviewed" on the Sunday morning and before I knew it I was enrolled onto a course which was going to cost me over £6000. After doing some more research I have decided that the whole thing doesn't seem cosher at all 5 weeks to become a plumber?! Now I've told them I not going to continue the course I'm being told I need to pay a cancellation fee of £3600!
Has any one else dealt with new career skills? And if so did you pay the cancellation fee as I'm worried if I don't it will effect my credit rating.

Have you signed anything? Did you agree to it?

Don't understand how you can be 'scammed' into it.

I did yes, I was told at the time it was a city and guild course and would be a fully qualified plumber by the end. Turns out the course only involves 5 practical weeks in a classroom. Done some research a city and guilds course should be 36weeks long involving on site experience and should only cost £1600. I was told if I didn't sign on the day and pay a £500 deposit I will loose the space

I have heard and read of similar courses on these forums, can't recall the name or area of learning but hopefully someone who remembers will.

I'm annoyed at myself for jumping straight into it without researching properly, just want to know what will happen if I don't pay the cancellation fee as I don't want it to affect my credit rating.

    What does the contract say?

They could take you to court and get a CCJ.

Ok, is it a city and guilds course or not? Do you have any evidence that they told you it was a city and guilds course?

Does the OP not have a cooling off period they can take advantage of, what with this taking place in their home?

The contract doesn't say anything about leaving the course and the sales guy came round to my house and interviewed me for reasons he claimed to make sure I was right for the course. There's nothing to say that it's an actual city and guilds course, and when the guy came round he said by the end of the course I will have the ability to install kitchens and bathrooms but after a five week staggered course I doubt that seeing as most of the plumbers I have since spoken to said it takes around 2 to 3 years to do that to a high standard.

I'm still wondering about a cooling off period. Have a look at this and see if it might apply.
