Customs charge ?

Hi all, just a little advice from you experienced peeps please.
Postie has just delivered a card saying I have a parcel to collect with a customs charge to pay....£11.28 including handling charge
I can't think of anything I've won from abroad.
Tried to track the ref number but no luck there.
I just wanted to make sure it was worth that before I hand over the cash?
Any suggestions please, or has anyone else had the same and knows what it is ?

proud gran to 4 lovely boys and one little girl
  • I believe £8 is the "admin fee" so that leaves just about £3 VAT so the item must be stated to be worth about £15? Think the limit is £16 so it must have been just over...

You're right about the £8 admin fee - I've ordered lots of stuff from the US in the past (normally action figures and clothes) but got stung with my first customs fee this week for an $10 t-shirt - the company that sent it had stated the value of the goods as three cents, no wonder it got inspected and slapped with a charge! Not too worried about it though because every time I order it does say that items are subject to your own country's customs charges, and I think I'd been very lucky up until now.

My postie let me see the item before I chose whether or not to accept it, so they might do the same at your local sorting office, gizmobenny

That depends on the sorting office, my old one let you see them, not had to use the new one yet.

There was a UK comp a short while ago (might have been a FB one) where the prizes were sent from one of their overseas offices and people were charged the £8+ customs fee, I know the company refunded the winners who got in touch with them.
