More and more comps want to do that and I choose carefully which to enter. I don't understand why they need that info either. I don't enter ones which want to post for you (on your behalf) as well.

Sorry to bump, but it's really the software they're using for the competition. It wants you to share it with your friends, so asks for access to your friends list. It also usually needs your email to confirm it matches the one you entered (so their marketing messages, if you receive them, don't just go into a spam account).

I've been working as a Facebook app developer for a few months now, and have such worked out what's going on with these!

They have to ask for permission to post on your behalf, just so it shows on your wall that you entered.

This is a common app used for comps, some aren't very well set up and ask for more than they need.

End of the day though, I have to say that people have a very wierd idea of why companies run competitions? It's not a streak of generosity driving it, it's promotion for their brand or product ...and if you wish to win prizes it's not unfair for them to gain some benefit from that is it? On social media the only benefit is spreading awareness usually by sharing.
IF you hide or remove the evidence that you entered most comps, they'll likely not pick you as a winner too. That seems fair to me too.
