I'd be happy paying that for what you get, it seems good value, 9 items for £9 and all organic and delivered and it all looks seasonal/non imported, what you would expect from a local farm box scheme. You can't compare supermarket prices with box schemes. The organic eggs seem cheap too, would be usually over £2 in London/Surrey ish.

This website is good for finding recipes for particular veg ingredients:

  • I have a veg box from Riverford. I have the seasonal box for £13.45 once a fortnight and plan all our meals around them. There are two of us.
I find the bigger box is better value as they charge the same I think for delivery for the smaller box.
I am very happy with it. We grow a lot of our food in the summer so I shall cancel it some times then but this time of the year there is not much in the garden.
We do have two farm shops near by but no farmers market. One farm shop is very expensive for veggies although I do buy potatoes there. I dont think these are organic though. The other shop is too far away to make a special journey.
I love getting my box and seeing what I am getting each week. (You can look it up on the website)
This week I had onions, carrot, parsnips, broccoli, white cabbage, chestnut mushrooms and butternut squash. Quite a lot of each.
Not cheap but I dont spend nearly as much in the supermarket now and I always have something I can make a meal out of.

OK, due to arrive on Wednesday for me is the following...

    1 x large fruit box containing (£11.65) :
    • apples AS (6 - 8)
    • bananas PE (whole hand)
    • kiwis IT (6-8)
    • oranges ES (some really big, 5-7)
    • grapes SA (box full)
    1 x large Veg box (£19.80)

    • potatoes UK (paperbag full, about A4 size)
    • carrots UK (a good dozen - sometimes quite large, larger than a supermarket)
    • onions UK (5 - 10ish dependent on size)
    • parsnips UK (some real whoppers this year, easily feed 4 people on two or three cut up)
    • calabrese broccoli IT (bigger than any head of broccoli I've seen in a supermarkt)
    • leeks UK (3-6 depending on size. Some really big and you generally only need 1 per meal)
    • mushrooms UK (good box full although thinner than I'd like)
    • cucumber ES (large)
    • celery ES (a whole head/bunch?)
    • cherry tomatoes ES (dozen or so coctail - bigger than cherry, but smaller than commercial spanish)
    • salad pack IT (mixed leaves and herbs)
    • aubergine ES (1 or sometimes 2 of these)
I've put the approx amounts in brackets beside each which is based on experience and what has been in previous boxes of the same size.

Here is a commercial photo, but they really do look like that most weeks.

I saved a link to http://www.neog.org.uk/ not so long ago as I noted their prices seem cheaper than what I was paying Riverford plus they're collection-point based instead of delivery, which is a plus point for me as delivery was awkward when working.

I'm hoping once we're both in work again, we might be able to incorporate a regular NEOG order, though note I can't speak for their quality as I've yet to try them. :)
    On the up :D

I am shocked that that small box of veg cost so much!! we are currently eating pony carrots costing £1.20 for a huge 20kg net!! they are the nicest carroty carrots we have ever had. We buy most of our veg locally. (the horse gets most of the carrots so we always have them fresh!!).

  • I got one from a farm shop the other day.

    In it was
    3 large parsnips,
    4 medium carrots
    4 medium white onions
    3 medium red onion
    huge cauliflower,
    huge savoy cabbage
    2 medium leeks
    small swede
    couple lb of potatoes

It was £5, I think it was great value.

    That seems really cheap.:)

We get a veg box from Kent veg box, am on the 3 week half price trial, not sure about continuing yet.

    This weeks veg box contained

    Potatoes
A bunch of carrots (most are very small)
    Purple sprouting broccoli
    3 leeks
3 beet root ( in place of cauliflower)
    6 white onions
    Black kale bunch of

    Medium fruit box contained
    Apples
    4 large pears
    6 clementines
    5 bananas

1 also get 6 free range eggs, 1 large white loaf 1 small granary

This is 3 weeks at the above per week, cost wise was £55 for the trial so double next time for 3 weeks

Am not to sure with continuing, would drop the bread off, saving £12 per month.

Debtmess yours sounds a bit pricey to me.

we started getting one a few weeks ago, first box I weighed it all and priced online versus ocado organic or Tesco regular.

My large veg box is £15 (cheaper than riverford, we use a local one) and large fruit £8.50. total 23.50.

Equivalent Waitrose organic was £43 and Tesco regular was £29. Very roughly, but at least I know it was food value, this is a bad time of year to start really as a lot had to be imported and e.g. apples don't keep long as been stored a while.

won't need as much once our veg garden is sorted...

I can list the full content and weight later as I wrote it down. On my phone at the moment...

Very interesting - works out at £18.33 per week at half price and £36.66 at full price. I am not yet convinced that my £9 box in the OP is good value yet (although it is very convenient), but it does seem a bit better value than your Kent veg box scheme - certainly at the full price.
