Thriftygifty - that is brilliant!! Keep going with roses like that and it will look fantstic. I really dont think you need to change it at all....
Quick question, did you do all the layers of the petals in one day? I usually do a couple of layers of petals and leave it to dry out overnight then add more or I find it too "soft" to work with. But whatever you did - keep going looks fab!
And cake sizes - I think they are probably 12, 10, 8 and 6". I say that because the top one I always think looks out of proportion (too tall - it isnt it is the same depth as the others but my eye thinks its deeper!) but you could do anything you want really. Mine were 14, 12, 10, 8 and 6" so you would be taking the bottom tier off and would still get the same look.
Havent had a go at the lace icing myself yet - but I'm sure their is a cutter out there that will give the same effect. We have a fantastic cake supply shop up here (off there today actually) so I will have a little look when I'm mooching in there.
Keep posting pics I think your doing a great job so far and everyone will be amazed you've done it all yourself!

Thanks, I did the petals all in one day took me about 30-45mins but it was abit soft to work with, the videos that I watched said to let the cone dry for 24 hours but I was to impatient lol, so think I might do that next time and then like you said stop half way and add some more petals the next day. I'm going to make the rest of the roses a month before just incase they dont last that long as the SFP is quite expensive!
I'm going to start making the fruit cakes in the next couple of weeks.
Will deff add more photos for people to see once I get started with it all hopefully it will turn out ok! Thanks again for your help0 -
What kind of icing did you use to make the flowers? I've seen videos that say to use gumpaste and others fondant. I've not tried making any yet.
I'm planning on making my cake too and had thought about a madeira sponge but I'm now considering a fruit cake too.0 -
Wow! Some fabulous ideas here and what talent! It's my o/h that is the creative one so I'm leaving invites etc to him. I am making my own favours by making candles in tea cups.Debt free other than a mortgage but still always wanting to save money :j.
Busy saving for my wedding July 2014.

I tried the roses in fondant months ago but they were ribbon roses but they came out quite thick and cracked and didnt look very pretty. I used Squires Kitchen Sugar Florist Paste (SFP) but i've only made one rose so far, but it rolls out very thinly and drys very hard. If your going to make roses this video is quite good: http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-make-sugar-roses although mine didnt turn out quite like theirs! I really rate the foam board thing and the ball tool and petal cutters to make the roses. If you have a shop called the Range near you they are quite reasonably priced. I like Maderia but thought it would be to stressful making the cake that near to our wedding and mine always goes like a volcano! Even though not everyone likes fruit there will be other cakes there so tough lol!0 -

Thriftygifty- Thanks I'll have a look online to see if I can get some sugarpaste and have a practice. That was my exact thought with the madeira, I don't want to risk any baking related hissy fits the day before my wedding! I'm thinking of getting a costco sponge for cutting.0

Hello
Also, made a protoype for chequebook style invitations. But looking at Rubysmummy's pics of the pocketfold ones I'm debating these instead. How do you keep them shut? Is it glue dots, velco? Or something else?!
BabyC
Hi BabyC
Could you please post your prototype check-book style & any advice/instructions I was toying with this method as there is so much to include with family travelling from all over etc this would give me a little more room to play with
Thanks:D0 -

I only use sugar flower paste, the gum it has in it makes it much more pliable and goes harder when dried. You can buy the gum and add it but its not worth the expense or hassle just buy it ready to go.
Another tip just in case you've not seen it elsewhere - use cornflower not flour or icing sugar, its drier and doesnt melt on your hands when warmed up.
Mikasmummy - the majority of my buttons were my grandmas button box, given by friends and family, and I used old earings too. I bought a couple from a local department store, but 2 cost me nearly as much as all the wire etc! I also bought quite a few on holiday in Bangkok last year. Bit too far for a shopping trip but if anyone wants to pay for me to go out there shopping for you just pm me :rotfl:
I used an oasis ball and one of the bouguet holders from hobbycraft and the wire was the same wire that I use for sugar flowers, you can pick it up in hobbycraft and I used 26# which is stiff enough to stay upright but bendy enough to wire.
I glued all the buttons to the wire -or it rattled a lot!
New2saving - I'm sorry, I bought the diamantees in Bangkok chinatown on holiday last year. I searched and searched when i came back for another for my bridesmaid and I did find a co in america but they were expensive. I'm not on the laptop but I'll see if I still have the link and pm you.
