Sorry, but I'm afraid they don't. That may be their aim, but I can assure you from personal experience that they don't achieve it.
I'd go along with 'sometimes', but not 'always'.
I also know from personal experience, they always got back to me within 24 hours, i put quite a few price matches in when i got my tv's last year, must have been about 10-15 i put in0 -
On two occasions John Lewis have price matched competitors for me on what was descibed to me as a "one off". In other words I can have it at that price but they won't be reducing the price for anyone else. Their slogan is lies and they should be stopped from using it.0

That neatly sums up the situation and mirrors my own experiences. They may be persuaded to reduce the price for one person, but then (despite their stated policy above) do nothing about reducing the price in their stores or online.
Only the other day they reduced the price of a computer for a few people who made claims. Others then tried to get the same price, referring to the successful claims already made, but the response was to refuse those claims and leave the price as it was. People (and I was one of them) were told they had to make their own separate claims, starting from scratch.0 -
If John Lewis have a higher price, just buy it from the retailer charging a lower price.
Simples.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
When I moved we bought our tv, dishwasher and fridgefreezer using their price match without any problems.0

Fine - but the point of this thread was that they don't actually do what they claim to do, which amounts to a false claim by an otherwise reputable company:
"If we find a national high street competitor offering a better nationwide price for the same product, sold with the same service conditions, we'll lower our price to match in all our shops and on our website, including when a competitor is having a sale."0 -

Really good & obvious point. So why then, do those of us that have commented on poor experience of price match bother to try and price match? The extra guarantee of course is attractive for large electricals, but something like a toothbrush? Why not just buy in argos as stated by the OP
For me I think as I worked there as my first job at 15 I am conditioned to thinking it is the best store for service (it was 20yrs ago or certainly one them) but I know my view is outdated and much has changed since then.0 -

(Bolding and underlining mine)
Well its not a false claim is it? Its been repeatedly said on this thread that they offer longer guarantees, so if you're trying to get them to price match on something with a shorter guarantee, its not being 'sold with the same service conditions', is it? Tbh the way I see it, with this exception written in, they dont have to price match (unless you bring them a price including an extended guarantee), so playing devils avocate, some might argue that they are providing a service beyond that which is advertised.0
