Nigella's allspice gravy

I was planning on making this to go with the turkey on Tuesday

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/nigella-lawson/allspice-gravy-recipe/index.html

Only problem is that so far I haven't been able to get hold of any whole allspice berries, just ground allspice. I've been to Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose with no joy, and I am not sure I will be able to try anywhere else now as the kids are off school and the shops will be packed on Monday to try to tackle them with a toddler and an older but severely autistic child in tow!

Has anyone made this with ground allspice, and if so did it turn out OK and how much did you use. Or could some of the good cooks on here have a look at the recipe if they haven't made it, and give me some advice about how much of the ground stuff to use.

Many thanks

  • I'd just chuck half a teaspoon of the ground allspice in and taste it at the very end. If it's not allspicey enough then add a bit more. Nothing can possibly go wrong

Whole allspice berries? Who has any of those at hand and do ordinary shops even sell them? I say "no"

So, the turkey is in its brine mix tonight, and the stock for this gravy is currently simmering away gently, and smells absolutely divine. :D

I will try to remember to report back after Tuesday on how it tasted.

Quick tip, I've read elsewhere, it may be a bit on the sweet side, so I'd suggest you add half the honey and have a taste before adding it all, just in case.:xmassmile

I do - I got em in that exclusive food emporium known as aldi.

Sounds like you have n sorted but yes, jut add a pinch of ground at a time as its always easier to add more than take it away f you over do it.
