The Socialist Tax Flying Unicorn which can tax unlimited amounts of money from The Rich remains to be discovered however.

I just listened to a piece on austerity in Portugal on Today earlier. No one asked the question where the additional money would come from, nor did anyone volunteer to answer the question.
Everyone seems to be ignoring the elephant in the room... again.0 -

I have come to the conclusion we're just additiced to entitlement. The tories are loosing popularity for simply trying to get back to reality.
Promising cash n sweets seems the way to go if you want to appeal to the wanton masses.0 -

Better than pushing them towards food banks definitely whilst the rich still trough.
In all these things their is a balance to be had.
IF we get the deficit down but we are still rubbing along the bottom then things will get even tough for the politicians, if we don't get the deficit down, tougher still.
It isn't the poorest that got us into this mess."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

That's just a stupid comment.
The deficit is so enormous that there is no real way of spreading it equitably. Certainly the welfare state expanded disproportionately to most other areas of the economy in the last 15 years.
Just so you have some grip on the numbers, there are only ~10,000 people with incomes of over £1 Million, the average wage in the UK is £25,000. Do you really think it is possible to plug the deficit with more taxes on the rich only? Seriously?0 -

That is your opinion if you believe aspiring to food banks rather than sweets is the way forward. (I know you don't).
The poor didn't create and ask for the welfare state. That is what they have ended up with. The vast majority are not layabouts although there are no doubt some.
Incomes is the operative word.
I didn't ask for the rich to taxed more - you suggested it.
I do think our governing elite are totally out of touch.
What happens after 2016.2017,2018 with little or no growth.?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Why is growth the be all and end all? We had plenty of fake growth in the Noughties to last us for a while and look where we ended up.
We have a massive amount of personal and public debt - deleveraging will take years.0 -
The deficit for this year alone (not the overall debt) equates to over £1500 for every man, woman and child in the country. We need to both raise taxes and cut public spending to eliminate this overspend, and then move on to paying the debt (around 10 times the deficit).
We have been living beyond our collective means as a nation for some time now, and need to make a painful adjustment. Sadly this comes at a time when many have been living beyond their means as individuals and so have to make a painful adjustment - so a double whammy.
Also, whilst stripping all of this expenditure out of the economy we still somehow need to achieve growth.
The one certainty is that we can't continue with the status quo unless we want to join Greece, Italy et al."When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty." - Thomas Jefferson0 -

Without growth inflation will rapidly erode the means of the poorest in society to live. It will mean that unemployment and welfare costs will increase as business cuts to stay afloat."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Well, it amused me when I clicked on the link to see that the ideal plant food for the Money Tree is Miracle Grow. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Growth figures take inflation into account so zero growth is keeping pace with inflation.0
