Credit file information changed - help

Options
Hi all,
I am at my wits end dealing with equifax and Welcome finance, Welcome I think are deliberately damaging my file.

I defaulted on a loan in 2007 and currently paying it off with the last payment next month, Welcome have deleted the credit agreement from my old address showing the default and put a new agreement in my new address, this new address has no adverse credit problems and is squeeky clean.
I phoned equifax who said they have to put it back into my previous address as this is where I defaulted so i contacted Welcome again and they just stone walled me and said the default goes to my new address.

Please can someone tell me if they can do this? my understanding is that entries entered onto my credit file have to be true and i dont think this is true as i didnt default in my new address and when anyone searches my file, right at the top of the list is the big fat D in red (default).

If you have told them your new address they will just move it across. It is the debt at an address so for example I had a welcome loan and it shows at my old address but when you search my file it comes up.

If its a new agreement number new payment terms unless you have signed a new agreement with them - it doesn't sound right.

Just if you move does not mean your adverse is removed - its 6 years for defaults and county court judgements I believe. As time passes and the orders get older credit improves.

  • Hi Samtoby,
I understand it stays on my file for 6 years and have accepted that,
They have moved my file from my old address to my new one for no reason i can see, now the default is showing at my new address and I am worried it will look bad for me, it is 5 years old and I defaulted in my previous address.
I have not signed any new loan or anything.

I just cant understand why they have done this.

However, they have deleted the account from my old address and created the account on my new address, can i contest this and state I dont have an account at this address and wish for it to be removed.

I know its my fault its on there but can only think they are really stuffing me up
  • Addresses don't have credit scores/reports. People do.

  • The debt belongs to you.
You were living at address A with that debt.
You are now living at address B with that debt.
So the debt will show at address B, because that is where you live.
It doesn't matter where you lived when you defaulted.
Irrespective of the address, the default will disappear 6 years after it was applied to your credit file.

    Thanks for replies.

Any data recorded on my file has to be accurate, I did not default in my new address, why have previous addresses? if it goes to your new address.

Looking at my credit file today it looks as though I have defaulted in this new address.
  • It is accurate,
You defaulted when you lived at previous address.
    You then moved.
Your report is accurately stating that you had a default when you lived at address A and that default is still on file when you moved to address B.

  • It is still a "live" account so they have changed your address accordingly. The DEFAULT is not on the address, the ACCOUNT is on the address, and the account happens to have a historical default on it.

On my file all my "live" debts have my current address, where I have lived 3 years. Some of these accounts have been open 4 or 5 years, so were not opened at this address, but still currently show this address because it is where I live.

Many of my closed accounts show a previous address, because the account was closed when I lived there and so the account never existed at my current address - there was no need for me to give them my current address as the account no longer existed.

As long as the account is open, and your creditors know where you live, it will show your current address.

The point of having previous addresses is so that you cannot "run away" from adverse credit by moving house.

    Why does it matter anyway?

  • Hi tintingirl,
I will explain why it matters to me, 5 years ago I got myself into this mess and take full responsibility, my relationship broke down and I could not afford to pay everything on my wage alone and had to default on 2 things, one of these defaults have came off.
5 years on I personally think I am still being punished and feel as though they have done it deliberately but from what people are saying they might have done the right thing on their behalf.

To have something on your file to effect you for 6 years is a long long time to be penalised and think the years should be brought down to 3 or maybe 4.

I think the whole credit scoring/file system is rubbish in the UK, I have high street lenders credit cards as of late (and I pay them off every month) and when I apply for some things I get declined but on some things I get accepted. I just find it hard to understand how the industry goes on at times.

But thanks for all your time in replying to my thread.

Whether you meant to default or not, the fact remains that you did. Breaking your terms of contract.
So, yes, you are being 'punished' for breaking your terms and conditions and are now having to face the consequences of these actions.
In life, if you break the rules, you get 'punished' and quite rightly so. That's life.

A lesson learnt for the future i think......

they will always move the debt to wherever you are living - the debt is attached to YOU not attached to your old house.

otherwise all you would have to do to get a clean credit file would be to move house!
