Advice - VIN doesn't match V5

Folks

I've just taken my car for its first MOT and was advised by the guy that did the test that the V5 doesn't match the VIN on the car itself. The last 3 digits are different.

I purchased the car over 12 months ago now. It was purchased from a main Subaru dealer on an 04 plate.

I didn't bother with a HPI check as it was a main dealer car. I didn't check the V5 matched the VIN.

What are the implications now ? The guy who did the MOT said that the DVLA would now be in touch ?

What does this mean for me ? Will I lose the car ? Do I have any chance of recompense from the dealership ?

How different are the digits, ie unrelated numbers or just the right 3 in the wrong order? If the latter it could be just a paperwork issue. If the former, it might not be good as its possible someone has tried to change the identity of the vehicle.

don't know tbh, may be worth asking a mod to move this to the Motoring bored where there are people with a bit more area knowledge.

I had this with my car, and it wasn't discovered until it was 5-6 years old. First I heard about it was from a letter from the DVLA. Turns out there was a paper mixup with the dealer when it was first registered, and my VIN number was actually someone else's Laguna, and vice versa.

DVLA were fine about it - happens all the time apparently, but they are only picking up on it now as all the MOT's are going electronic etc. They issued me a correct V5 form with the correct VIN :)
