Freeview

Hello

Please dont shout at me as I know the subject of the digital switchover has been played out on this board :o

I've read all threads regarding this and have ended up more confused than when I started, if that is possible :/

What I need to know is what type of freeview box I need to bring an old standard TV up to date?

I would like the ability to record and playback recordings and also the RTE channels too, I cant really afford to spend alot so the cheaper the better.

Many thanks folks

    1. To get RTE you need to have a HD Freeview Box. (Not a Bog Standard freeview box, this will not pick up the RTE channels)

    2. To record and watch back you either need to link the HD freeview box up to your video,DVD recorder or the likes or if you want to have all in one box you need a Freeview+HD ( Note the + ) box (instead of the standard freeview HD box) as this has a built in hard disk. Prices vary depending on brand and hard disk size (Bigger hard disc usually means more capacity)..

    Google Freeview HD+ box

to avoid confusion some recorders state they have HD, but this may refer to a Hard Drive in the machine
You will need a HD(high definition) tuner

I would strongly recommend the Humax

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004NEKNEM/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=electronics

£239 is expensive I know, but considering the 500mb is £219 the extra £20 is worth it for the extra hard drive. Humax has twin tuners too so you can record 2 channels at the same time even whilst watching a recording back :T

Brings you onto the problem of your TV thou, you must have an HDMI connector on your telly or else the box wont talk to it :o
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

Bye the way Catroe consider buying a modern digital Tv before buying any of these recorders. They will display the picture much better

I agree with the earlier post regarding a Humax box. Humax have won loads of awards for their boxes over the last couple of years and consistently come top of any reviews.

Humax sell "Grade A" boxes direct to you for £169 + postage.

In case you are wondering what " Grade A " means, I took this from the Humax website.
"Grade A's are predominantly store returns that have been tested and where appropriate repaired to an "as new" standard in our own service centre or factory. They come fully boxed with all accessories and full instructions and are all backed up by a complete 1 year on site warranty."
