: Its in Romford and did i want to drive? Ummmm....no thanks. Me? drive through Blackwall tunnel? A totally unfamiliar route when i havnt passed my driving test? There would have been no steering wheel left by the time we got there as i would have crushed it with my nerves! So he drove and i was able to buy some new christmas tree lights - they twinkle! and flash! and do 8 different things instead of just the static ones that i have always had:T. I was also able to buy new curtains for my 16.5 foot living room window one pair of 90x90 and one pair of 66x90 and cost only £12.99 a pair, And they are fully lined. Hopefully they will go up today and i will be able to see the huge purple flowers on them in all their glory:j.
I hate driving through that tunnel but as I'm near Crystal Palace and my dad lives in near Romford, it's either that or out and the QE2 bridge
Good price on the curtains can I ask which shop it is in Romford?0 -
Lisa sorry to hear your news.
Katieowl hope you're ok.
Byatt I hope your house feels like a home now
Kittie if the long life cream that you are talking about is tinned it's in Home Bargain.
I'm still suffering from the after effects of my cold. The house elf has finally lost a front tooth at the age of 8 and keeps saying "Chrithmath" because he can. My dad is coming at the weekend. He hasn't been up here since I stopped speaking to him about 20 years ago. He's not staying with me but he will be visiting. If I had started cleaning last month this house wouldn't be clean enough for his OCD by the time he gets here, so I haven't bothered :rotfl:0 -
Does anybody have a good recipe for Chinese chicken and sweetcorn soup please?
This is my own recipe and always goes down a treat, some of the ingredients are optional, if you have them/like them then go ahead, otherwise don't worry about them....It is very easy to make..
Half fill a large saucepan with water and put on heat. Add a chicken stock cube, chopped onion , finely chopped celery (optional...I use the little leaves off the top) and some chopped cooked chicken. (you can use raw chicken breast if you chop it into thin slivers.) Bring to the simmer until the onion is tender and chicken is cooked/heated through. You can add chopped mushrooms if you wish.
Add a small tin/handful of sweetcorn and allow to heat through. In a dish mix 2tbs of corn flour with a teaspoon of sesame oil and a good pinch of five spice powder or star anise (if you have them).Add a little water, make into a paste and add to the soup, which will thicken.
You can whisk in a little egg if you want egg drop soup like they make in the Chinese restaurant. If you want a more substantial soup add some thin rice noodles before you add the corn flour and allow to soften......:T Enjoy.....“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. Byatt - am totally green with envy, I have stove envy:o:o
Katie -hope you are back by now, feeling so guilty that we nagged you to sit in A&E I do hope you are ok
Fuddle - clearly Alfie is related to my labby beast who regulars manages these things, his current favourite is to wait until DD18 has made her lunch for college, she then goes off to get ready invariably leaving it on the side - he snaffles it all, lettuce, cucumber, onion, tomato, mayo, the sandwich bag the lot:eek:
Cranky - hope you cold clears before your visitor, and good luck with the visit it sounds like it may be fraught.:D0 -
Thanks 2tonsils will be trying that later0

Fruit Cobbler Recipe
In an oven proof dish add in 1 mug of self raising flour, 1 mug of granulated sugar and 1 mug of milk. Mix it all up so it's thoroughly mixed together and then add 1 tin of value tinned fruit of your choice on top. Bake in the oven on gas mark 4 until golden. The flour mix will rise up above the fruit.
(((Hugs))) PAH, hope you're feeling more yourself soon.
is there any chance of using plain flour for this ? what is the stuff called that makes it rise? would that work does anyone think?0 -
Had a wonderful weekend after we decided to just take it easy and enjoy ourselves. On Saturday we had an easy day at home just relaxing and then went out at night to the karaoke down the coast from us. It was lovely and all the people were chatty and friendly . Some of them are turning out to be really nice new friends. I drove home while my OH enjoyed a night off and had a drink. I don't drink at all so don't mind driving home. I love driving here it feels natural to me now.
We got invited to a Greek night with a Greek buffet next Saturday which is on instead of the karaoke. It will be a nice change and its only 5 euros contribution to the food costs. I do better at Greek buffets as they tend to have a selection of meats and lots of salad and fruit at them rather than the sandwiches /pies we get at the British buffets here.
On Tuesday there is a new country and western dance class in our village so we are going to give it a go to see if we like it. It's just up the road and no driving to get there so that is good.
Various things keep being announced for just before Christmas and I realised last night that many of them are on the 17th December, so we will have to choose where we want to go the most!
The weather has been lovely here over the last few days and today was 24 in the shade with wall to wall sunshine. So we got up at nine (despite not getting to bed till 3am through sitting talking for so long with our new friends.)We drove up the island to have a look at the car boot sales. Lots of old clothes there which I am not interested in, but got a set of 6 nice plates for 3 euros and a giant carrier bag full of freshly picked clementines for just 2 euros. The flavour in them in amazing!
We took a picnic (of sorts lol) with us and went fishing off the jetty. It was lovely in the sunshine and fresh air and we stayed for a couple of hours. Home for roast chicken with mash, green beans, oyster mushrooms and courgettes.
Now lounging in front of the log fire which is burning away nicely . It's getting rather cold at night with the clear skies.
I took this photo while we were on the jetty...its a halo round the sun which I thought my camera would not take...but I am pleased to say it did. Its caused through ice crystals around the sun and is supposed to be a sign of a really bad storm coming...“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. Yes use plain flour and stick a couple of tsps of baking powder in.0 -
Have looked at our electricity usage this weekend and am horrified at how much we are spending - we are spending £80 per month which is way too high, so I have spoken to OH and tomorrow I am going to buy a halogen oven to try to bring costs down. DD18 regularly will use the big oven to cook one small item and OH is just as bad. I am hoping that this will mean that they stop and the bills go down.
Really I need to change the light fittings in living room (10 bulbs) and DD18 bedroom too (8 bulbs) and reduce those but the cost involved there is huge and if I am honest I cant decide what to change them for. Having never had the luxury of light fittings before I find myself spoilt for choice - like many things, having lived in a situation of putting up with whatever is there, the idea now of total freedom to do whatever I like is daunting.
I did make one change this week and bought DS14 a tall lamp from Ikea with a high watt bulb, it makes his room much better and is alot less than the three bulbs in his main light.
I plan on buying a bio bulb for the living room lamp which would cut alot too, I may do the same for DD18 room for now too.
I know many of you have bought bio bulbs in the past does anyone have any recommendations?0
