Do I complain? (Long - apologies)

Hi guys,

So I went to the J/C to sign on today (been signing since 8/6/12). Some of you may know from previous posts i've just qualified as a nursery nurse (HNC). I've been getting plenty of interviews (basically every private nursery i've applied for) but still no job. :(

The feed back from my interviews has been that I do a good interview, I just lack experience. So I asked my J/C advisor about possibly getting a work experience in a Nursery. My best friend's Boss was willing to take me on for 12 weeks, as part of the scheme that the J/C offer.

My advisor said it would be too hard to set up, and so went onto set up a work experience at a local soft play center.

I spoke to the owner of XXXX soft play and he said he'd text me with a confirmation that I was supposed to start the 1st of this month, the owner never got back to me until the 4th, agreed to start on the 8th but I wasn't able to tell him my availablity for the weekend until 12th due to being a lone parent and trying to make child care arrangements (I have an OH, we do not live together, he's in the Navy, hence me still being a LP).

I emailed him on the 12th and said that I couldn't do the W/E as I'd have no child care but I'm available all this week (all day, not just school hours as we'd previously agreed during school term) and he emailed me back saying it wouldn't work out and he'd inform the job center.

Now I've no adversion to working weekends, if it was paid work but as this was a work placement unpaid (30 hours a week), sorting out childcare at a short notice basis (even though DS goes to his dads 3 out of 4 W/E's we do not sort out arrangements until Thursday). If I was working a weekend included job then yes i'd alter this, but seen as the line of work i'm persuing is Monday - Friday I don't want to 'rock the boat' more than what's recently went on (Long story with DS dad).

Maybe I did make things awkward, but giving up my weekends for unpaid work in something that isn't going to benefit my community (charity work would lie okay in my eyes) just doesn't sit right with me, especially if it means I have to chase people about to get child care.

The owner of XXXX soft play lied to the job center and told them he'd offered me just working during school hours, minus the weekends. I have email proof that this was a lie, I said I could do all of this week and not the weekend just gone by, and he told me it wasn't going to work out.

And so I got a warning off my advisor today. Now if this had happened next week once all these new rules have came in regarding JSA, I'd have been left with hardly any money for the next 13 weeks. (Hardship of what I get per fortnight). This is what my advisor told me.

I'm biting my fingers to not email him an angry complaint. Can you imagine if I lost my money over the Christmas period? Due to him lying?

My question is, do I complain?

Who to? XXXX Softplay or the J/C?

Do I complain about J/C or Advisor not doing enough to set up work experience with my best friend's work (private nursery).

The J/C say i'd have to pay for a PVG but i'm already a scheme member and so it would only be about £10 to update this, i'd be willing to pay this myself along with a medical to get the MUCH needed experience I require.

  • I would complain to the JC, on the following grounds.

    1. Your advisor did not listen to you, and issued you with a warning despite you having email evidence that s/he had been lied to.

    2. You are doing your very best to get an unpaid work experience placement AT A NURSERY, yet the JC adviser says 'this will be too hard to set up'. You did your best to facilitate a placement, but this did not work due to the fact you are not available at weekends. [Stand your ground on this. You have NO obligation to be available for unpaid work at weekends!]

    3. You are concerned that you have been issued with a warning by someone who you feel is NOT doing their best for you, and is NOT listening to you.

My advice would be to ask for a different JC adviser, but I am not best experienced in this - maybe someone else could help?

Although the nursery sound to have been a right pain, lied and generally mucked you around, I would NOT complain to them as it won't achieve anything except maybe to put your friend's job at risk!! :(
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

Thank you. I've actually spoken to two advisors about starting at my friend's work and they've both said it'd be too hard to set up as my friend's work isn't currently a member of their scheme so they may not have the right insurance.

My friends work takes on students and people from skill seekers, so I can't see why they wouldn't.

It was a soft play center that messed me around (My J/C advisor set this up), not my friends work. (Myself/My friend/Her boss trying to set that up). Her Boss even phoned the J/C to tell them they'd be willing to take me on as a work experience and during school hours so I wouldn't have to sort child care for my son.

The JCP would be able to set up Wexp at yr friends for a maximum of 8 weeks.Employment advisors at my JCP would do this with no problem.
This is a voluntary scheme and would not result in sanction!!!
JCP would also pay for child care and travel.

I believe this is the underlying reason JCP is making life difficult for OP.

My advisor has mentioned she can sort out travel costs for me, however I did say to her I could only do within school hours as I wouldn't be able to find child care Monday - Friday.

She never mentioned once about funding for childcare, currently I do have my DS going to an after school on a Wednesday as I want to have a foot in the door when I do get a job. And I mentioned the the owner of XXXX soft play that I can work a bit later on a Wednesday because of this.

Theey'r currently full to the brim Monday - Wednesday, so **** knows what i'll do when I do find employment

    bump again.

I've never wrote a letter of complaint before, or really complained about a service.

Do I complain verbally first, then in writing?
Or both at the same time?

I plan on writing a letter over the weekend, hence my asking.
