Can you still buy meat in bulk?

I'm not a restaurant owner or anything, just a guy with a family of 4 and a mountain of debt. I seem to remember my Dad buying big quantities of meat (can't remember if he froze it himself or if it came frozen) and splitting it into days dinners. Can you not do this anymore? If you can, where do you get it?

I've googled, btw, but I only get places that sell to businesses.

You can often get half a pig or lamb from smallholders and sometimes butchers do them.

  • Yup, try your local butcher's shop, or a proper farm shop, by which I mean a food shop attached to a farm, not Farm Foods or a "Country Store" or in fact a Country Living type shop - one of our local "farm shops" sells hand-turned furniture, handmade quilts & handmade toiletries to tourists, rather than food! Or if you have a street market with a good butcher, ask them; their overheads are much lower than a shop's.

Near us there's a good farm shop on an "A" road that regularly advertises half-pigs or lambs at perfectly reasonable prices. They are usually already split into joints, chops etc. and bagged up ready for freezing. It is possible that you could buy the same amount of meat cheaper by haunting supermarkets waiting for those yellow stickers, but you'll get much better quality this way & you have better things to do with your time! Have you any big Chinese wholesalers near you? My mum does all her meat shopping in our local one and gets lots cheaply.

Where I live in North Dorset there are several farm shops and butchers who will sell you a half or whole pig or lamb. They will butcher them how you want and they cost a lot less than buying the equivalent amount of meat from the supermarket.

Of course this is only any good if you have the storage for it :)

    Hi

if you have access to Costco or Macro then you should be able to get large quantities and most good high street butchers will take an order for anything that you want

If you have any asian shops or butchers near you.
They will happily sell meat in bulk to you. Tats what i do and its out so much cheaper.

My friend regularly buys half a lamb of the halal butchers.Think its costs her between £30 -£60 depending on the size of the animal. but they prepare it for by jointing it, chopped into steaks etc Oh and they mince it for her at no extra charge.

Halal butchers are more likely to do this as businesses and local people use them. They also order items if you ask them.

By the way i am not promoting anyone, i just use these butchers are they are five minutes walk from my house.

    Hope the above helps,
