Our chancellor

I know there are bigger things to worry about but tonight on the news our chancellor claimed the government would now focus 110% on the economy - now I'm a Tory voter and also generally try to be positive about things but to hear the person who is meant to run our finances use the term 110% just made me cringe; my old maths teacher would be turning in his grave - never dreamt that this state school kid who left school at 16 with a few o'levels (I'm late 40's) would one day feel superior to a chancellor of the exchequer....sharpen up Mr Osbourne.

He needs to stop digging in his heels and recognise that Plan A has not worked and he needs to try something different.

Fat Boy Ballz must be laughing his head off at Osbourne.

It's working better than taking on so much debt that you end up bust which appears to be the suggested policy alternative.
  • Not sure re the Plan A or B argument - just gobsmacked that such a person would use a phrase usually associated with lesser sports stars, minor celebrities and math thickies in general ho hum. This just re-inforces my general view that the economy will do what it wants (ie follow the path of least resistance) irrespective of the chancellors actions (and comments!) and thank goodness for that, it seems.

He probably is. It's very easy to laugh when that's all you have to do!

I thought the thread title was going to continue:

    Our Chancellor,
    Which art in heaven,
    Hallowed be thy name
    .....

It may explain the confusion that he sometimes appears to have about the difference between reducing the deficit and reducing the debt.

  • Nothing wrong with Osbourne's 110%.

I'm concentrating 110% on my own economy. I'm spending 110% of what I earn, using 110% of my credit card limit, and 110% of my overdraft limit. This is all supplemented by payday loans at 110% monthly interest. So no recession in this house......

    ... er

... must go. Postman has just delivered 110 letters... lots of red writing.... must be all those banks offering me more credit cards, bigger overdrafts etc....

Balls (and for that matter the entire Labour party) are very good in opposition - they just disagree with whatever the Tories do. However the second Labour get into power they are clueless as to what to do.
  • we are in the biggest recession we have had since the Great Depression. we NEED to cut back on spending. Why don't people understand we will be in recession for a long while and there is NOTHING that can be done to stop it. Time is the only healer. When there is genuine confidence, things will change.

In the meantime, they need more austerity measures. Govt spending must be cut back to pre-1997 levels.

more sackings and reduced pensions for all public sector workers.

the biggest area of public spending is salaries, benefits and pensions - they are UNSUSTAINABLE. they need to be slashed.
