Can't suffer in silence any more.. (Skin condition)

I have hidradenitis suppurativa a nasty skin condition (please google images) mine ain't as bad as others but it can get worse and I think it is.

I have it under my breasts, on the sides of my breasts down my sides, inner thighs and on my tummy It's disgusting. I am having to take this antibiotic twice a day for rest of my life I think because when I miss a dose I get more boils..

The thing is I have not missed a dose for ages and suddenly I am having more pimples on my tummy in new places and top of my thighs 2 large boils seem to be growing..

This certainly is not doing my sex life any good.

There is nothing the doctors or dermatologist can do except surgery and even then they can come back..

Any other sufferers out there?

sorry to hear this. I've seen this condition mentioned a few times now on MSE so hopefully there'll be someone along soon.

fwiw I found taking antibiotics for a different skin condition to yours (mine was adult acne) had absolutely no effect whatsoever, in fact it even introduced problems which weren't there before. I have given up going to the drs about it now as I know this is really the only way they deal with it.

With your hidradenitis suppurativa it would be good if they could find out what might be causing the skin to act or react in this way. Could it be stress hormones, diet, etc.. It may even be worth looking at 'alternative' medications (TCM is supposed to be good for skin complaints) though you'd have to proceed with caution if you were going to go down that route.

Good luck, I hope it clears up soon.

    Hi

I had real problems with my skin for a long time and also took antibiotics for a while.

The best info I was given was regarding my shower gel - I was advised to try ABC Tea Tree skinwash. You can get it on-line, but I don't know of any shop that sells it.

I can honestly say I would not be without it. It has had amazing results for me. I know that everyone is different - but it might be worth a small cash investment and try it for a month, see if it works for you too.

Also, just to add - I am in no suggesting that the OP stop taking medication and use thos product instead. Medications should always be taken in consultation with your Dr.

i don't know anything about this particular condition, sorry, but i just wondered if coconut oil might help at all? i've had psoriasis since i was a kid, tried every lotion & potion going over the years but tried coconut oil recently & it's completely cleared up!

hope you find something that helps.
  • My baby boy was diangnosed with atopic dermatitis when he was 8 months old and it took us 6 months to get it in remission and under control I think the condition is similar with hidradenitis, in the sense that it is an autoimmune disease that is incurable (let's have the courage to call it by the name) and no doctor or conventional medicine can treat it 100%. The key is in the day to day management of the condition in order to minimize flare ups (lifestyle, dietary changes, stress management, creams and home remedies).
I did a lot of research online and I can recommend you make your own as well. Good luck!

First of all darlyd big hug (((((darlyd)))))

I have hyper sensitive skin with allergies. A copper bangle worn for a day will make my skin red, raw and oozing. Lots of shower gels and beauty give me itchy rashes so I look like I have measles. Many detergents make me itch like crazy too even if I don't get a rash. Face masks with Fuller's Earth make my face lobster red.

I've learned over time, that no matter what it says on the outside of the tube/bottle, if the cream/lotion etc smells strong then it may well irritate. For example Organic Surge blissful daily moisturiser is organic and sensitive skin tested but stinks of rosemary and lemon oils and made my face sore.

I found that it's better to use a cream etc with a low amount of an ingredient like tea tree oil first and build up to a stronger product IF it's doing some good. (Side benefit is the product with the low concentration should be cheaper).

I bought some ABC Tea Tree stuff from The Australia Shop in Covent Garden and it made my skin sore. I also tried that Ingram's Camphor Cream from a South African shop online with same result.

Do you use normal detergent ? I find Ecover products are great.

Going organic has improved my health including skin, it's been amazing. Organic live yogurt was recommended to me by a doctor and it's great either eaten or used on rashes.

Actual pure coconut oil smooths on easily and sinks right in as a body moisturiser and I've had no reactions to it.

Do you think your body is getting used to the antibiotics too much ?

I'm so sorry to hear about your problem and think you are a very strong person to cope with it.This was covered on embarrassing bodies - but I can't remember what they said about it

  • This condition was also covered in the TV series The Food Hospital (also Channel 4, I think?) A sufferer was given some dietary changes to try, which really helped. It might be worth trying to find that episode?

Found the link to the case involved - see below:

The change to diet really seemed to have a good effect, so might be worth a try?

  • Hi!!

I have this, although not as debilitating as yours.

I generally get large deep boils on the inside of my thighs right near my groin. I actually got septacima from one as it got so bad over 6 hours! I couldn't even stand!

I found losing some weight helped, along with cutting out all dairy products. My GP only really recommended repetitive surgery on cutting them out, but it wasn't a cure!

Think back maybe to when you didn't have this problem. What was different? Maybe you weighed less? Did you eat differently?

    Moisturising Regularly also helped!
