Ahh that makes sense, would you do the access course or the foundation degree? The other Uni doesn't run nursing only the UWE although I could go to Cardiff? However if I then choose Cardiff my placements will be there too?

    :cool2:

You'll need the access to get onto the foundation degree I'd imagine

Not necessarily, your placements can be at whatever hospital has space for you, not necessarily the nearest one to your university :) There's always Exeter and Bournemouth too

Sorry Sparks, its a foundation programme and doesn't require anything to enter:
The Foundation programme is aimed at individuals who may have few or no formal qualifications but who can demonstrate a clear commitment to pursuing a career within their chosen profession. Personal, professional and educational experiences will be considered to determine motivation and ability to progress onto the degree programme.

Unsure if I would want to do that though as its F/T and I am unsure if I would get student loans/funding? Also I don't have anything that shouts out, 'offer me a place'. That being said it has more structure/modules that would be more current to me whereas the access is just general stuuf :o

I understand you mentioning other uni's but I don't think financially I can? The cost of living away from home would be huge and the amount of loans I could get in comparison is small. It wouldn't be so bad if I had parents who would support me.

I did a student calculator think on student finance gov and this is what it gave back, thats after putting finacial hardship in (I guess a one parent low income household if finacial hardship?) and discounts any NHS busarys I could get. Could I rent a room at a uni for that? If I lived near a uni I could get rid of my car, I will only keep my car if I go the the uni here as the site I would be learning at is about 45min away, 1.5hours in rush hour.

    You could get per year:
    • £9,000 Tuition Fee Loan
    • £2,698 Maintenance Loan (for living costs)
    • £3,354 Maintenance Grant (for living costs)

It's confusing! I think I will wait until June until I can speak with someone. I think it doesn't help that I would be classed as an adult learner too :o

    :cool2:
  • :o If I am reading this right I could start September, for an access course. I thought you could only have a 24+ loan or a student loan but according to this you could have both.
You can take out a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan and then a student loan for higher education. Your loans will be rolled into one and only one monthly repayment will be made. If you progress to higher education after taking out a loan for an Access to HE diploma course, your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan balance will be written off, on completion of your HE course.

I don't need to repay anything for my NVQ as its funded, I am guessing this will have no impact on the above? In which case I could be in the 2014 intake  So I am off to speak to the college 2 days before the uni!

I would Beanie but I am yet to decide if I can do it this year or not, financially I mean. I could still work p/t but that would net me min £80 to £100 per week. I am unsure if I coud live on that while running a car :o So I am just going to feel the water in June and see what happens. If need be I can save everything from now until Sep 14, still apply for the 24+ loan and then have what I saved plus part-time wage to live from.

    So many decisions :undecided

Sorry Pap, my thought was speak to a student advisor now & they can advise you on all the options/help availiable so you can think about your options & then ponder.

I agree with Beanie, the system changes quickly unfortunately and the 24+ Advanced Learning loan is quite new and probably won't be around for that long, especially with the great terms you get now.
I'd go for it this year, the other stuff will work out. You can work quite a few hours alongside Access, it won't be that many hours in college - it's just about being organised which we know you can do :)

Many thanks to you both I am going to wait until June I think, there doesn't seem to be a cut off period.

I don't know if it will be ok Gem as I have to cover all my bills/MOT/Tax all with min £40 a week, that will be hard, my min bills are £150 excluding rent/petrol. College is 3 days per week + 20 hours self guided. So I was thinking about working 2 full days/evening and maybe 2 other evenings. Therefore I could study 5 days and 3 nights. Obviously this can be increased if I find the work 'easy'.

I don't know if I would be entitled to any other funds? I don't want to jump in head first, take this course and the loan but then find out come December I can't afford it or my car breaks down making work impossible. Then I would be stuck! The only other option is if I leave work and go back into retail while I do this qualification but thats like taking a huge leap back.

One thing I am considering is paying for a year's tax for my car, that will give me until May 2014 as long as it passes its MOT. However that means finding an extra £80 before the end of May.

Oh and I have decided that my cake tin has now become my cake/MOT tin. If I want to do this I will have to make sacrifices, the cake show is one of them. Plus if I enter this year there will be no holiday as I can't go away during term time. :o All of which I am yet to break to Mum.

    :cool2:

Grr, just filled in am email form for the college and I am unsure if it sent. If I haven't recieved a reply by Friday I will phone them :)
  • I have contacted the college, I would be entitled to a 24+ loan but there is no other funding. Unless I apply for a bursary from student finance England, however I am unsure what bursary they mean as I can't find it on the info online.

So do I apply this year and hope that I get enough hours to cover the outgoings I need or do I save this year and apply next year? Obviously I could just skip all these problems and do the foundation programme which I believe I would get the full student finance for, but I don't think I will be accepted and I am sure the Uni intakes have already been decided for this year!

    Anyways... Budgets

I have infected my thumb which is making work difficult! So spent £7.85 on a precription, £3.20 on cream and £2.39 on pain killers.

    £447.96

    £5.00 prescription
    £2.39 coop pharmacy
    £120 car saves
    £146 bills
    £50.00 CC
    £40.00 rent
    = 363.39

Remaining is £84.57, no petrol as I have well over 1/2 a tank and I will be spending £4 on a cross stitch pattern. Leaving £80.57...

Now I have been offered to be taken to the Doctor Who experiance in Cardiff, I decided against it a few months ago as bridge costs/trains were too much. However I can get there free on sunday and just put in some petrol money. So £20 including entry tickets :undecided

That would leave me to save £60.00, undecided. I will update soon on my decision.
