PAP, a couple of my friends are nurses and the Access and first year stages you can definitely work alongside - anything in the caring profession is a big help when you qualify too as you'll have loads of experience.
The "very few qualifications" they are talking about is basically, whether or not you have Level 3 qualifications so A Level or equivalent - have you got those?
The NHS funding for nursing once you've finished Access is pretty generous and very little has to be paid back at all. Starting salary for nursing is £15k so you're earning well very quickly after study.
Nursing is also only two years, not three as you only need the diploma to be qualifiedMost of my friends are doing their final degree year over two/three years while they are working as they are based on practise.
Hope that helps and I think you'd be fab!0 -
Skinty, I think I will go, like you said even if its just to ask questions etc. I wouldn't want to be studying behond 35 so that gives me 8years, 7 if you discount Septembers intake.
Sparkles, they lady with knowledge
See thats the problem, these are the qualifications I have/will have come Sep - 9 GCSE's (English is C but Maths is D), Key Skill Level 2 in IT and AON and the problem one - National Diploma in Animal Management which is equivelent to 3 A levels  Oh how I regret so much doing that! Then I will have NVQ 2 in Health and Social care.
Thats good to hear, however will I get any funding while doing the access through a college? There would be no way I could live on £80 a week if I work while studing and I couldn't work 4 days a week as I would have no study time. Unless I did two full days and two nights?
A district nurse can earn between £25,783 and £34,530 according to the national carrers service. However I understand if I couldn't just go into a job like that. I would love to do house calls though, I love the visiting I do at the moment, I would get itchy feet if I had to work in a single place.
Ummm according to the uni website its:Three years; January and September intake at Glenside Campus and Gloucester Campus.
Just registered for the open day! Must remember the date so I don't end up working0 -
I'm so glad you are going to go and find out about it!
Just remember that it will cost money, but it's an investment, so if it's manageable with whatever funding is available, you and your future are things that are worth investing in.
I think you would be wonderful at it, and you seem easily disciplined and intelligent enough to cope with the work.I'm a Money and Debt Adviser for a homelessness and housing charity in Scotland. Many thanks Snaggs. I need to sit on it until I can go in June and see what course I need to do before applying. I don't think I will be able to enter any courses until next September anyway. So that gives me a year to save and get debt free! I can technically be debt free when I come back from France so that isn't bothering me too much. If I could save £300+ a month until next september that would give me £3,500 so one years outgoing's. Need to open this year's ISA to hold the pot of money I think...
So decisions in the coming year do I go to the cake show and on holiday. Or do I chose one of the other? I was planning £100 for cake show and £100 holiday. Thats a lot for both! So has the cake tin now become the holiday tin?
:cool2:
Edit: Make that a little more as the cheapest caravan is now fully booked0 -

It will depend on the college whether you need to do access, was the National Diploma more than five years ago? Most will probably require it but there's different funding available for it. I'll PM you a link.0

Beanie, certainly is
Sparks, do you mean that it will depend on the uni if I have to do the access/foundation course? Entry to the Uni is:GCSE: A minimum of five subjects at grade C or above including English Language and Mathematics.
A-level subjects: Grade C or equivalent in Science or Social Science at GCE A2 level. (PE is acceptable as a science subject
Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; achievement of 30 level 3 credits at merit, of which 15 must be in a Science or Social Science; achievement of level 2 credits giving GCSE equivalence in English Language and Mathematics.
Its funny because I had to redo me AON for this NVQ as the teachers said that my original qualifications had been spent. My GCSE's were 2002 and my Diploma/Key skills were 2004.
After looking at student loans, no matter if I get an NHS bursury I would still be able to complete my Uni course with some ease. It will be tight but it can be done. I have thought about getting rid of my car but the campus would be too far away to bus/walk. So its just the access course/foundation degree funding that I am stuck on. I can't see me being able to save the £2.5k and become debt free before next September.
Out of interest what if I apply and am not accepted onto the local Uni course? Thats the only place that is open to me
Not much planned for today, just sorted all my shoe boxes, they are done :T Just have to wait for empty shoe boxes to start arriving now and hope everything I have purchased fits :rotfl: Lil brother wants to go swimming again... I can't finacially though

Yeah it's whether the university will accept your current qualification as relevant enough under the A Level criteria - it will depend on what you covered. Best thing to do is ask them, but being 2004 - they'll probably want you to do Access.
Although nursing is a popular course, a lot of people stay local to them and there's the big university in your town but you could always apply to another two which are within two hours of you. Normally you're only in university a term at a time and then on placement, so your placement you could request at your local hospital so it would save you on travel.0 -

Ahh that makes sense, would you do the access course or the foundation degree? The other Uni doesn't run nursing only the UWE although I could go to Cardiff? However if I then choose Cardiff my placements will be there too?
