Acting on MIL's behalf

After my MIL got herself into difficulties we want to take her case on with Norton Finance and be able to communicate with them on her behalf.
We’re a bit concerned about doing this but we’re in a better position to do this than she is.
If we are consented to act or negotiate on her behalf with Norton are there any implications for us –perhaps as we’re now associated in some way with the case?
Just a bit worried before we sign anything that will affect our credit record.Would this be the case if we’re just acting on someone else’s behalf?

Thanks as usual
