    First clue:
"After a gruelling 48 hour donkey trek, we have finally arrived at our first destination! Time to stretch our legs and walk around the lovely streets of the city, we’ve learnt that it is home to the first ever public room in the world to be lit by electric light! You English are rather clever!!
I think they're in Newcastle upon Tyne

    from here: http://www.cntraveller.com/guides/europe/england/newcastle/where-to-stay

"the reading room at the Literary and Philosophical Society was the first public room in the world to be lit by electric light."

    thanks for posting

I think the answer is Newcastle upon Tyne based on this from wiki:-

Swan's first demonstration of the light bulb was at a lecture in Newcastle upon Tyne on 18 December 1878, but he did not receive a patent until 27 November 1880 (patent No. 4933) after improvement to the original lamp. His house (in Gateshead, England) was the first in the world to be lit by a lightbulb, and the world's first electric-light illumination in a public building was for a lecture by Swan in 1880. In 1881, the Savoy Theatre in the City of Westminster, London was lit by Swan incandescent lightbulbs, the first theatre and the first public building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity.[2]

It says the competition closes 15th June, is it worth changing the end date?

Holiday Haggler I've been Money Tipped!
Definitely Newcastle as the second clue confirms it

“Time to start soaking up some English history, we are spending the day in a medieval fortification, built back in 1168 by Henry II, which gave this place its name. We've swapped our sombreros and ponchos for a suit of armour, what jolly good fun!”
    Wins in 2015

Kettle Chips, Cambridge Satchel Bag, Tixs to Sound Of Music UK Tour, Name on a bench, Hotel Chocolat Eggs, Cuddly Dog, Stabilo pens, Samsung Galaxy Tab S, LG G Flex 2 phone, Gramofon, Lunch Meal For Two at La Tasca, Lunch For Two at Handmade Burger Company, £30 Gourmet Burger Kitchen Voucher, Canon Ixus Camera

I wonder if we have to be more specific than Newcastle, because there are a few Newcastles in England, there is: -
Newcastle, Shropshire (Newcastle on Clun), a village (and parish) in south Shropshire
Newcastle-under-Lyme, the principal town of the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire
Newcastle upon Tyne, a city in Tyne and Wear

Win oodles of Tyrrells crisps by guessing where our Mariachi band is this week! Here is their first clue:

“We’ve arrived at our next destination and have decided to spend the afternoon in the local park. We really enjoyed visiting the Edw...ardian butterfly house and are now enjoying the view from the top of a memorial whilst munching on a lovely bag of Rather Hot English Chillies… Enjoy!”

Think you know where they are already? Click on the link to enter!
