washing powder - cheap v's brand?

we all use it - but is cheaper washing powder as good as a leading brand? does anyone have inside info ie. is any own brand the same as brand
its an expensive item to add to the weekly shopping -
and i hate doing the ironing and finding a mark hasnt washed out first time!
lakeland and other mail order companys do washing balls - priced around 8.00 and reckon thats all you need for months of washing - does anyone have one - do they work>?
