Pro's and cons of shift work?

I know this thread is really old, but I'm starting a chat page for shiftworkers. It will have lots of info on it and am hoping to build a good mixed community of shiftworkers across the many fields that people work shifts in. I think it's mainly what suits the individual.

However. a note caution to anyone who might look down upon shift work.

Today's 24/7 society we live in, and all the services we call upon, be it emergency services, take-aways, out of hours banking, public transport, late hours shopping, restaurants, theatres etc.. well... it's pretty much all facilitated by people working shifts.

I sometimes think the 9-5 culture forgets about that.

I’ve read this thread with interest as I’ve just applied for a shift based job after always having worked 9 to 5. A couple of people have expressed surprised when I’ve said I like the thought of shift work, but I am attracted to it as:

• I’m fed up of the 9 to 5 routine – the whole sense of dread that comes over you on a Sunday afternoon/evening and that Monday morning feeling
• No more being stuck in traffic on the way to work
• It will resolve the problem of making appointments, etc
• I like the idea of having a couple of days off in the week – not at the weekend when everyone else is about and everything is so busy.
• The job I have applied for is on a five week shift I will work 4 days, 4 days, 3 days, 3 days, 4 days – I’ve always found that it makes such a difference having a four day week, ie this week - I know it is only one day shorter, but psychologically it seems much less than that!

Anyway like I say I’ve never done it, and I might get the job and not be able to come, but I’d at least like to give it a go!
