Mildly curious to see if MSE is representative of wider society.

Anonymous poll.

Depends on how much work I do during the year and at what rate.

    P60 doesn't include benefits though?

I'll enter a vote for my bracket later, and anonymously, as this thread is really just to see if the MSE collective resembles the wider population.

Since I am retired and at the moment mainly living off savings and the proceeds of investments I guess my external income would be close to 0. But that wouldn't represent my standard of living. Perhaps your poll is asking the wrong question to give you the insight you seek.

Just curious as to what this will all prove?

Someone earning £15/20k a year but having bought a house many years ago with a small mortgage could well be in a better financial situation than someone who earns 3 or 4 times that who bought a home (or rents and yet to buy a home).....

Are earnings directly related to quality of life, or is it disposable income that is directly related to quality of life?

What are we including then - gross salary or final position after all taxes and benefits. What about those who have their rent and council tax paid or live at home with parents with minimal housing costs, should they adjust for this too?

Just curious as to what this will all prove?

    Nothing at all.

Just curious to see if MSE-ers are representative of wider society.
Are earnings directly related to quality of life, or is it disposable income that is directly related to quality of life?

    Income, not earnings.

I'm not asking for just salary, but rather total income including benefits, pensions, investment returns, etc.

But as for disposable income, it rose non-stop between 1997 and 2007.

I believe it has fallen a bit since the recession and tax rises, but not markedly.

I retire early and reduced both my gross and disposable income but would say my quality of life is better now so perhaps as long as you have enough to live it isn’t necessarily related to either.

    Final position.

If it's paid as a benefit, then yes include it.

Not for this exercise. That gets a bit complicated.

Just out of interest how is disposable income defined, is it adjusted for housing costs, energy, food commuting etc?
