Let's talk honeymoons....

:D:D:D

I did a search and can't find a thread just about honeymoons, so hope this is ok.

Are you having one? If so, why? if not, why not? Have you booked it? Where are you going? For how long? What are you looking forward to most? Any special MSE tips on getting a good honeymoon bargain (as if such a thing exists! lol!)

Any time I start to feel stressed or bored of the wedding stuff I just sit back and think of the honeymoon... :D and I'm pretty sure half the reason OH is getting married at all is to get the honeymoon! hehe!

So, let this be the place for the honeymoon chat and wow me with your amazing plans :)

  • We are having one so we can relax after a hectic day and start out married life off relaxing :)

We are going to a log cabin in suffolk Monday-Friday for £400ish. It has a private sauna and hot tub in it.

Then we will be going to the canaries or somewhere warm in December with the vouchers we have asked for as wedding gifts :) We have £70 already! :o

We're stuck on where to go! I always wanted to go for three weeks, however a friend is getting married exactly two weeks after us, and she's a good friend, so that's given us a quandary. Our wedding is at the end of March so we'd be going away straight after that.

I'm currently thinking 12 nights somewhere, back for the other wedding, then a week somewhere around September time as something to look forward to once all the wedding is over.

I'm going to the Dominican Republic for 2 weeks.

To get the holiday as cheap as possible, I got the better company to price match to the cheapest place.

We decided on the 4 most important things we wanted for the holiday (all inclusive, hot, not too expensive and a private area). To get the private area, we would have to pay far too much, so we went for the first 3.

With all the expense of the wedding, we're not going on an expensive honeymoon.

Also with all the stress leading up to it and things, I don't think we'd appreciate going somewhere amazing! We'd rather leave that for when we have a bit more money - maybe for an anniversary.

So... we've hired a self catering cottage up near Carlisle...we'll be able to stay in if we want, or go out if we want.

It's just going tobe totally relaxed and I can't wait!

Ooh, all your plans sound great :)

We can only have one week as we're limited by the school holidays, and it's got to be quite tight with us getting married on Saturday, going on honeymoon Sunday - Sunday then back at work on the Monday! It's not ideal but only going for 7 nights rather than 14 or more means we can really splash out on somewhere amazing.

I've been looking at Sandals Caribbean resorts. It's frustrating though because BA only let you book flights 355 days in advance so I've another 10 days or so until I can see the flight options! We'll probably book flights and accommodation separately as OH travels loads for business so he gets loads of airmiles (or whatever they call them nowadays) and also gets them with his American Express card. We can usually get some quite good flight deals - like this summer we are both flying to and from New York, first class*, for only 800 in total for both of us - which is cheaper than just buying the flights in Economy without the airmiles!! So hopefully if he accumulates more miles and vouchers and stuff this year, the flights won't be too expensive.

We want somewhere hot, luxurious, with a beach, all inclusive. Our holidays are usually brilliant but tend to be more road trips (we've done Scotland and last year we did California/Death Valley/Las Vegas etc and this summer is New York/Toronto/Niagara Falls/Boston) - all amazing holidays but not the total luxury and relaxation that we want for a honeymoon :)

It works out quite well too because the months leading up to April are incredibly stressful for both of us - he works in finance so there are companies reporting their end of year results, and I'm a teacher and the spring term is always by far the worst with preparing for GCSEs, getting coursework folders sent off etc - so it's exactly the time of year that we really need a good relaxing break, more so than summer, which is a more relaxed time at work for both of us.

Soooooo excited and can hardly wait a week and a half to be able to start looking at flight options! :D

*just wanted to add, we're not total snobs who will only fly first class (in fact neither of us ever have before) but with the airmiles and voucher it literally worked out cheaper to fly first class than economy!

That sounds really lovely. The first holiday OH and I ever went on together was a little self catering cottage by the sea in Devon, and it was utter bliss. Just total relaxation and best of all no phone signal so he COULDN'T check his email and Bloomberg every 10 seconds ;) We took a lot of wine and naughty foods and there was a random April heatwave so we went in the sea fully clothed, and drank sparkling wine on the beach and went for walks and watched loads of movies... and I still look back on it as one of the best times of my life :)

That sounds like a really good way of doing it! Then as you say you'd still have something to look forward to after all the wedding excitement is over.

Are you having one? Hell yea!
If so, why? Well it's a holiday we would have taken anyway at some point so might as well do it now.
Have you booked it? Yep!! It was booked relative early on and then paid off £250 a month.
Where are you going? Sharm El Sheikh, 4*, All inclusive
    For how long? 7 days.
What are you looking forward to most? 5 days diving in the Red Sea with my new husband :T:T:T (2 dives per day)
Any special MSE tips on getting a good honeymoon bargain The actual honeymoon wasn't particularly bargainous, and neither is the diving :D but the biggest bargain I got was the parking at Manchester airport - I used various comparison sites and I got the week's parking for £22!!

(Oh and we're getting married on the Tuesday, reception on the Saturday, honeymoon on the Thursday, then just over a week after it's my big brother's wedding).
  • As I'm restricted by school holidays also, we're thinking of a few days away in a lovely hotel or cottage in the UK after the wedding then a big honeymoon in the Summer! That way we'll still have something to look forward to in the months following the wedding.

As we already have everything we need in our house (moved in last year) we were thinking of asking for money or vouchers (slight concerns incase the company goes bust) as wedding gifts. Has anyone else done this or is planning on doing this? What did/do guests think? Am worried about it sounding cheeky asking for money for honeymoon but it's the only way we can afford a fabulous honeymoon!
Any thoughts would be very much appreciated!!!!x

All you people restricted by school holidays, I'm actually annoyed that we're getting married Easter weekend so having our honeymoon in the school hols when usually there's no need for us to! Unfortunately neither of us is up for going back to work and honeymooning later so we'll just have to Put up with the extra cost.
