    I've been Money Tipped!
    Many thanks, cheap bacon.

I'm down to my last tin of beans also, so 8 tins will do (don't eat loads of beans).

This might interest you, taken from Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_bacon

In 2001, 5% of bacon consumed in Denmark was imported. During 2004 and 2005, bacon production was moved to Germany, and especially Poland where costs are lower. This almost immediately resulted in imports climbing to 75% and the price falling to one-third of Danish-produced bacon. However, the product is still marketed as Danish bacon, since it is produced from Danish pigs. In Danish shops, it is not possible to buy Danish sliced bacon that has been sliced in Denmark. Danish consumers have expressed unhappiness with what they perceive to be a deceptive practice. In the UK, slicing and packaging of Danish bacon continues to be carried out in UK plants owned by Danish Crown.

I also wonder about the claims made in the podcast you heard. The Danes are still currently using what are called sow stalls or gestation crates although these will be banned in Denmark from 2014. Sow stalls have however been banned in the UK, I doubt somehow the use of sow stalls will be found in any of the UK plants owned by Danish Crown. It is also claimed the use of sow stalls increases the animals' stress levels and also cause other welfare issues as well.

Incidentally, it appears that rearing and slaughtering isn't carried out in the UK plants owned by Danish Crown. In the UK it appears, only slicing and packaging of Danish bacon is carried out in UK plants owned by Danish Crown.

I realised my mistake after logging off this morning where I say I doubt the use of sow stalls will be found in any of the UK plants owned by Danish Crown.

According to the information on Wikipedia most plants have moved out of Denmark to more economically advantageous locations, this has partially happened to the slaughterhouses too, leaving Denmark to concentrate on just the raising of the pigs. And as mentioned above, no rearing or slaughtering appears to be being carried out at any of Danish Crown's UK plants, so it seems.

The conclusion appears that the animals' welfare when referring to the rearing of pigs in Denmark may not exactly be considered the best at the moment, especially by the consumer. At least not until after 2014 anyway.

I should have also posted the following article to keep this point balanced:

In Pig Farming, Growing Concern Raising Sows in Crates Is Questioned - Marc Kaufman, Washington Post Staff Writer June 18, 2001
